English Lit exam about to start and I can't find my teacher....just slipped my mind: What is it called when the audience/reader knows something that the characters don't??

Can anyone help? Need an answer in like the next 5 minutes!

if its a play the character would be "the harlequin" who can be seen only by the audience and not the cast ??
