The Derry-born player picked up the injury in Wednesday night’s Championship defeat to Preston North End at the Bet365 Stadium.
McCarthy will name his squad for the Euro 2020 play-off semi-final early next month ahead of the game in Slovakia on March 26th.
The Ireland boss told FAI.ie: “I’ve been in contact with James since he got injured. He’s told me he will do everything he can to get on the plane to Bratislava next month and I’d expect nothing less from him.
“James has been a key player for me throughout this European Championship campaign and we will support him all the way with his recovery.”
