Real pulled off a real masterstroke when they sold him to Barca and bought Beckham instead of Ronaldinho

That's exactly where it went wrong. Sidelining Makalele for the sarong wearer. Case of the newshirts putting shirt profits before cups. And to think that Juan La Puerta initially wanted the Spice Boy instead of Ron.

Is it ****.... Figo was the frst to do back in 1999, a tradition thats been kept going by valencia and depor recently when the stopped the geriartricos fgrom winning anything...

And Laporte wanted one of Beckham and Ronaldinho, thank christ the right move happened... (Great documenary on bbc3 a while ago charting Laporte's rise to the throne and how surprised they were when Ronaldinho agreed to sign...)

When the Real president was asked why he didn't sign Ronaldinho he said "he's too ugky for us, he wouldn't look nice in our white jersies". Ronaldinho, being the genius she is, responded by saying "Yeah, I might be ugly but I have a charm...."

Read "barca: a people's passion". It was published before then and has a record of the Real fans chanting that at Barca

Also known as 'Barca good. Real very bad!' (Copyright Phill Ball) for its balanced and neutral take on the club.

Yeah because his Real book isn't biased at all...

Of course Burns' book is a love in, how can you not fall in love with them?

Big club that talks the talk about local talent and then staffs its team with mostly foreigners (especially, for no good reason, cr*p Dutchmen). How ironic that Espanol have employed far more Catalans in the last decade than Barstadolona.

Disagree with you on Ball and Real. Ball is not a newshirt himself and I wouldn't count White Storm as much of a hagiography as Barca: A People's Passion. On the other hand, Burns book When Beckham Went To Spain reiterates much of what Ball says. Coupled with Burns' undoubted talent it is one of the best football boks I've read recently.

To be fair to Burns, he supports Barca for the reason that most non-Catalan Spanish Barca fans do, not like the Boixos Nois whose own world view mirrors the Ultras Sur except for which country they belong to (Laporta, to his credit has tried to kick these w*nkers out despite threats to his life, as seen in the BBC doc mentioned). They are deeply hostile to anything that smacks of Francoism of which Real are through history associated. My one and only arrest inside a stadium was in La Coruna in the early eighties when Barca lost in a pre-season tourny final to Dynamo Kiev (which included Olev Blokhin). Some kids got on the pitch to run with the celebrating Dynamo players when the National Police, in their usual courteous way, manhandled them off. The whole crowd - many including old men - hit the roof at this and pelted the police on the pitch with anything that came to hand. This was not a show of Catalan nationalism by any stretch. My own arrest came from a spotter who saw me joining in and tried to grab me by the hair as I was leaving. In the end all I got was a good telling off - along with another fan - from what was probaly a seargent on a police coach.

Figo and Salgado were also pictured in photos that appeared in the book 'Diario de un skin.' Also McManaman done an interview for the US fanzine which in the same issue attacked immigration. How f*cking ironic, no?!

Can't believe Diego Forlan is going to be (or could well be) the top scorer, you would have got some odds on that being the case at the start of the season.
