Wexford League v Defence Forces (Oscar Traynor)

After a good win against the Leinster Senior League, Wexford will be disappointed to lose this Oscar Traynor tie against the Defence Forces in Ferrycarrig this afternoon as the home side were by far the better side, created enough chances to win two matches and were only kept at bay by a remarkable performance by the Defence Forces goalkeeper. Wexford started, I think, with Lee Walker, Alan Freeman, Gary Delaney, Ian Sinnott, Craig McCabe, John Peare, Spot Murphy, Ricky Fox, James Peare, Adam Beary and Kyle Dempsey. Wexford controlled the game more or less from the start with Spot Murphy, playing deep, pulling all the strings for the home side. However, Wexford found it hard to create any real chances and it took until the twentieth minute for Wexford’s John Peare to knock a shot a yard over the Defence crossbar. The Defence Forces then went a goal ahead on 32 minutes when the Wexford defence allowed the opposition centre-forward too much space inside the penalty area, and he headed home a good cross by the Defence Force’s decent outlet on the right, Tony Smith, to put the away side a goal to the good. Wexford’s Kyle Dempsey then had a good chance with a one-on-one against the Defence keeper, but the latter stretched out a foot to keep out Kyle’s goal-bound low effort. 1-0 to the Defence Forces at half-time.

Wexford largely dominated the second period as well but some really good saves by the Defence Forces keeper kept the home side from scoring while the Defence Forces managed to score more or less from the two only chances they created. With five minutes gone, the lively James Peare for Wexford couldn’t find a free player when running in on goal and, just afterwards, his one-on-one against the Defence keeper was blocked by the latter. A blaster by Wexford’s Adam Beary was next pushed away by the Defence keeper with a decent save. The Defence keeper then pulled off a fantastic double-save against Adam Beary and a rare foray by the Defence Forces into the Wexford half enabled them to score again as the ball was crossed tight to the Wexford goal-line to allow a Defence attacker to stab home from a yard. 2-0 to the Defence Forces. With six minutes to go, Kyle Dempsey got the goal Wexford deserved when he netted from close in. But the Defence Forces restored their two-goal cushion when a bad Wexford back-pass enabled a Defence attacker to round Lee Walker in the Wexford goal and score from a tight angle. In injury time, the Defence keeper pushed away a decent free by Spot Murphy and game ended shortly afterwards with the Defence Forces winning by three goals to one despite being under the cosh for most of the game. Best for Wexford were Gary Delaney, Spot Murphy and James Peare.
