Interesting that the stats from the game - 83% possession for Liverpool; 8 shots v 2 - don't really tie in with passinginterest's posts. Football is a strange game at times; is there any other sport really where you could see so little of the ball and yet be creating problems all the same? A rugby game with those possession stats would be an easy win for example.

It’s a strange game. Liverpool have their usual mad high line and they’re owning the ball but creating little. Shrewsbury have only had the ball in the Liverpool box maybe five or six times from crosses, but it looks dangerous every time. Kelleher has dealt well with a cross and a short back pass so far in the second half.

Usual assuredness on the ball in this half and he’s had to deal with at least one more dangerous cross. Game is still in the balance, he might have a big moment or two before the end the way it’s going.

It's because football is low scoring. You can have lots of possession and lots of chances, but don't score and the other crowd do from a corner and you're losing 0-1 all the same. Same surprise score by the weaker team in rugby just means it's now 21-7 or whatever.

Heart in mouth moment as he stood on the ball under a bit of pressure near his own 6 yard line. Wouldn’t have made much difference though as Liverpool had already got a third.

For sure. (I think it's also much easier to set up a quick counter-attack than in rugby too) And it's interesting that what's supposedly football's weakness (in America in particular) is really its strength.

Anyways, 4-1 now, and still 80%+ possession for Liverpool. That's not a strong Liverpool team - Morton, Dixon-Bonner, Gordon and Woltman all started, whoever they are; they're not even in the first-team squad listing on wikipedia - and it does highlight the gap between League One and the top of the Premier. Shrewsbury are only 8 points behind Portsmouth. I think in terms of right now, Kelleher is our top-ranking keeper, but he does need more game time, and of course Bazunu has three years on him.

Anyways, on to Arsenal on Thursday hopefully.

Yes was lucky. Overall he did fine. If only he played more games, then he wouldn’t be under the microscope so much with everyone nitpicking at everything! The concerning thing is that it would only take a couple of clangers like the one he almost had to end his Anfield career as he doesn’t exactly have much currency built up. Thats the life of a goalkeeper. That’s why I would much prefer him to be playing first team football anywhere for the rest of the season

That’s true alright, it would only take a couple of mistakes ( maybe even only one big one ) and the Liverpool “ “ faithful “ “ would soon be deciding that they had another Karius on their hands ! ! Maybe thats why it is very hard for goalkeepers or any young home grown players to make it at these clubs. And of course a goalkeeper, because of the position he plays is in that extra bit of danger.

Surprising that he doesn’t get bored. Maybe they don’t get bored in Argentina ( wink )

He's played 3 of the last 4 Liverpool first team games, and impressed to such an extent, that they're now nitpicking over mistakes "nearly" made.

He got the ball, slipped, and still cleared it away. No massive issue to talk about. Compare him to his rival at Portsmouth, who when he loses possession, it's in the net. Proper mistakes that lose his team matches. Such are the "benefits" of playing every week.

Perfectly good / interesting thread totally ruined by someone totally lacking any objectivity or, as I said earlier, good faith.

Mods, do your job before this deteriorates any further please.

Edit - mypost deleted his comment complaining that people are commenting on a mistake Kelleher made, comparing it to Bazunu whose mistakes regularly (very regularly?) cost his club games. Something not grounded in fact and totally petty.

General consensus is that both are playing very well.

Every goalkeeper makes mistakes, and are often highlighted by the result of a game. Bazunu's kept clean sheets in five of his last eight games. Can you provide evidence of what led to the goals in the other three?

If it's objectivity you want, there's lots of other sources out there for you.

If you want Ireland fans to have a serious discussion about Ireland players on an Ireland player's thread, this is as good a place as any.

Not with people like you around. Lacking any objectivity or good faith. This thread stopped being a serious discussion a long time ago, almost exclusively down to you.

Yeah, I think the main problem is the lack of any engagement with the discussion. So "When he loses possession, it's in the net" simply isn't true, as has already been pointed out. But it gets regurgitated here again.

I think most of us, even when our views differ on players (and they will differ of course) at least engage with the points made by others and that's what leads to interesting discussion. But mypost bypasses all that and lives in his own little world of half-truths and dodgy facts
