    WYW v Kilkenny

Wexford completed their home league campaign in a positive manner as they collected a comfortable three points against Kilkenny in Ferrycarrig this afternoon. Wexford started with Ciamh, Lynn, Nicola, Lauren Dwyer, Becky, McKenna, Kylie, Aoife, Ciara and with Lauren Kelly and Blessing Kingsley up front. Wexford dominated possession from the start although it took a while before they put Kilkenny’s stand-in goalkeeper and best player, Bronagh Kane, under pressure and Bronagh eventually moved outfield for Kilkenny in the second half. On 24 minutes, Wexford’s skipper, Kylie Murphy, neatly lobbed the Kilkenny keeper, Kane, but the goal was ruled out for offside. This was followed by a shot from distance by Wexford’s Lauren Dwyer, but Kane just managed to deflect it past her own post for a Wexford corner. Wexford just needed a bit of flair to beat the Kilkenny defence and it came on 32 minutes when Blessing Kingsley profited from a good through-ball by McKenna Davidson to score Wexford’s first goal. Wexford’s second goal was virtually identical to the first as, four minutes later, Lauren Kelly was set free by a good pass and finished well for 2-0 to Wexford. Kylie Murphy then rounded Bronagh Kane in the Kilkenny goal who brought her down and Kylie finished from the spot to make it 3-0 to Wexford at half-time.

The second half was mainly a question of how many more Wexford would notch on the score-sheet. It became 4-0 when Ciara Rossiter hit home a right-footed shot from inside the Kilkenny penalty area and 5-0 when Nicola Sinnott touched home a Wexford corner from close to the Kilkenny goal-line. Becky Cassin then made it 6-0 when she got the goal of the match by coming in on her right foot from the left-full back position and blasting a shot past the new Kilkenny keeper. Blessing Kingsley then dispossessed the Kilkenny keeper to make it 7-0 before Zara Lawless scored directly from a long-distance free to get Kilkenny’s consolation goal. Subs for Wexford in the second half were Kira Bates Crosbie, Breda Cushen and Fiona Ryan. Wexford now face the formidable threat posed by Peamount in the cup-final in the Aviva tomorrow week with an outstanding away league game against Cork still to be finalised. 7-1 to Wexford at full-time.
