    WYW v DLR Waves

Wexford showed some good form in a miserable Ferrycarrig tonight as they picked up a comfortable three points against DLR Waves. With the biggest match of Wexford’s season – the cup semi-final against Galway, looming closer on the horizon, Tom Elmes started with Maeve, Lynn, Lolly, Nicola, Ciara, Aisling, Edel, Kylie, Lauren Kelly, Fiona Ryan and with Rianna Jarrett up front. Wexford started well and applied some good pressure early on but it was DLR who scored first when Sophie O’Donoghue shot low past Maeve Williams in the Wexford goal following a rare DLR breakaway. However, Wexford soon got the goal back when Ciara Rossiter put a crisp volley from outside the area past Sophie Lenehan in the DLR goal although Sophie got a hand to it. Wexford continued to apply the pressure for most of the rest of the half and Rianna Jarrett smacked a shot off the outside of the DLR post from a very tight angle. With five minutes to go in the half, Rianna Jarrett created her own penalty when she drove into the DLR penalty area and got taken down. Sophie Lenehan guessed the right way for Rianna’s spot-kick but was unable to keep it out and Wexford were ahead 2-1. It stayed like that at half-time.

With the rain now sheeting down, a third goal for Wexford looked like it would be an insurance goal. After Kylie Murphy had a good header tipped around the DLR post for a corner and McKenna Davidson came on as a sub for Wexford, the important third goal came for Wexford when Edel Kennedy headed home a Ciara Rossiter free for 3-1. Wexford’s Lauren Kelly then had a goal ruled out for offside but it soon became 4-1 when a DLR defender let a Ciara Rossiter corner slide off the top off her head and into the DLR goal for an own goal. Best DLR player on the night, Niamh Prior, then curled a sumptuous effort into the top corner for 4-2 but you didn’t think Wexford would let slip the three points given their dominance. It became 5-2 when Rianna Jarrett finished off a good McKenna Davidson cross and 6-2 when Lauren Kelly goalled when the ball dropped at her feet following a Wexford corner. Lauren Kelly then made it 7-2 as she converted from another Wexford corner and Wexford were home, if not dry, with a final 7-2 scoreline. Late subs for Wexford were Blessing Kingsley and Becky Cassin. Best for Wexford were Rianna Jarrett, Ciara Rossiter, Lauren Kelly and Edel Kennedy, while Lynn Craven was really effective getting forward down Wexford’s right flank. For DLR, Kerri Letmon impressed in addition to Niamh Prior but was marshalled very effectively on the night by a tigerish Lolly Conlon in defence for Wexford. 7-2 to Wexford at full-time.
