    Wexford FC v Cabinteely

Late Cabo goal consigned Wexford to another defeat but a further game in which Wexford showed glimpses that a better side is in this squad than some of the results have shown. Wexford started with Corey, Paddy, David, Lee, Andy O’Connor, Emmet, Crokey, Shane, Andy Mulligan, Conor and with Sean Roche up front. Didn’t look like a full-strength Cabo side but the away team started the better as, on two minutes, Corey Chambers had to get down smartly to keep a Cabo snap-shot out of his goal. On 13 minutes, Cabo couldn’t get a final touch to a very dangerous cross which went across the Wexford goal. On 23 minutes, Chambers in the Wexford goal managed to just deflect a Cabo one-on-one the far side of his goal-post for a corner. It took 27 minutes for Wexford to get a decent sighting on the Cabo goal as Wexford’s Emmet Nugent had a drive a yard over the Cabo bar. 0-0 at half-time with Cabo having applied most of the pressure.

Second half was the better half. Cabo applied a lot of early pressure at the beginning of the half as Wexford found it hard to clear their lines. However, Clarke in the Cabo goal then did well to block away a good chance by Wexford’s Sean Roche and Shane Griffin for the home side had an effort a yard wide. Wexford then manufactured a number of quick breaks as there is a good deal of pace in the side but the final ball was always lacking a little bit. On 28 minutes, a cross from the right was tucked away nicely by a Cabo forward and the away team were a goal to the good. With ten to go, Conor English did well to get behind a Cabo defender who bundled him over inside the box for a Wexford peno. Conor took the peno himself and sent Clarke the wrong way and it was 1-1 and the game was heading for a draw. However, Cabo then stole the three points with a late winner as substitute Sasaki stooped to head home a low Cabo cross to leave the score at 2-1 to the away side at full-time. So, not the best of seasons for Wexford but you could generally not fault the team’s effort throughout the season although the final run-in was badly affected by the retirement of Danny Furlong, the loss of Jack Doherty to Longford, the transfer of Darragh O’Connor to Leicester and the ending of the loan of Sean Callan from Shamrock Rovers. I’ll give my player of the season award to the very hard-working and talented Paddy Cahill while best of luck to Thomas Croke who has announced that this was his last game for the club.
