Ollie Cahill has blamed Cork’s FAI Carlsberg Cup exit at the hands of Shamrock Rovers as the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Cahill have been on a downward spiral ever since and even the consolation prize of European football next season could prove beyond them.
They have won just twice in the eircom League Premier Division since Alan Bennett’s bizzare own goal sent the Leesiders crashing out of the cup against the Hoops at Turner’s Cross in December.
"We aren’t playing for our pride, we need to get our pride back first before we can do that!”, Cahill told Sports.com. “We were flying before Christmas but the defeat against Rovers in the cup really knocked the stuffing out of us. We haven’t been the same since. We did our best to put it behind us but to no avail.
“Needless to say the heads are down but the spirit in the camp is still good.
“In situations like this it can be very difficult to put your finger on it and pinpoint the problem, but there is no escaping from the fact that we have struggled to score goals all season, and if you don’t score you can’t expect to win games.
“Also, our home form has been poor. That hasn’t helped either, and the fact that the fans have started to give the players a bit of stick and to give Liam (Murphy) a bit of grief as well hasn’t helped, but that isn’t a good enough excuse. In fact the fans are entitled to grumble, we have given them very little to cheer about recently.”

Didn't stop rovers winning at the cross in the cup did it?
Sure what else is Ollie going to say? Hes hardly going to stand up & blame the manager?
Truth is we a team or little skill dependent on 100% effort all the time. Murphy has admitted as much before. Our only tactic is hoofing thew ball into the corner & 'puttin them under pressure' & once thr players are not up for 90mins of chasing the ball we usually lose.
fair play ollie, at least he used a different excuse- maybe he could write up a list of them for gunther before he goes! Excuses are all well and good but the fact is that the players haven't been performing to anything like 100% and the manager is a fool. Thats why we're doing so badly.
