    Talking Dunphy at it again

"LIVERPOOL in the European Cup final? There goes the neighbourhood.
Still, I suppose that's the price Uefa must pay for lowering the bar and
enabling some of the cheaper teams to take part. There's always the risk
that one of them will hop on a lucky wave and, grimly holding their
Lotto ticket above the spray, ride all the way to the tournament's
    pointy end.

Liverpool fans are famous for the selflessness of their perspective, so
even they, I am sure, in the midst of their euphoria, will be feeling,
with the rest of us, a twinge of sadness right now for AC Milan. Where
else but the Champions League can you go to measure yourself against the
best that Europe can offer at the time? So you've got to feel sorry for
a side that gets all the way to the final, only to find, standing
alongside them in the tunnel, not one of the best teams on the
Continent, but not even the best team in Liverpool."

Dunphy has a point though, every now and then a team can get lucky, like Greece last year,England in 66 and Liverpool this year,it's just the luck of the draw. You can't honestly say Liverpool are in the top 2 teams in Europe and if you think that you are a mug.

I think Giles said it right the other day on the radio, they are there to analyse the matches rather that look into their crystal ball and predict who could win.

If I predicted at the start of the season that Liverpool would reach the Champions League final I would have been told I was mad and rightly so as I would not have been basing it on any facts or form. But football can prove people wrong from time to time. No expert would have said Greece would win Euro 2004 but my mother may have as she went their once on holidays. Does that mean she knows more about football then Johnny Giles. There is more to football analysis then getting predictions right. At leat the guys on RTE dont sit on the fence and call a spade a spade whereas Sky and ITV, is football LIte a lot of the time.

we have every chance i mean if liverpool can get to the final and everton have proven all year that they are better than liverpool ! then why not ?

if you even look at the two mersyside derby's as europeen games everton would have won on away goals

of coarse sensible people dont think liverpool are in the top 2 , but as ive seen on an other thread the majority of people on this site do think that greece are the best after winning the euro's

From what I've seen on footage and from what knowledgable football people have said, England throughly deserved to win the world cup in '66 based on their results. Perhaps they were not the most attractive side and didn't have the flair of Eusebio's Portugal or Pele's brazil but they absolutely won it on merit. Something that for some unkown reason sits awkward with Irish football supporters

Sure they had a slice of luck in the goal that never was (Liverpool would know about that!) in the final but they did run out 4-2 victors and without the blatant cheating of their Argentinian counterparts in '78 and '86. Like wise I don't believe Greece were lucky to win Euro 2004 - over the whole tournamants they had the most consistant results - where's the luck in that?

I do not believe that the 3 teams you mention above were or are undeserving of their achievements. It is a fact that in almost every chamionship victory, FA Cup win and World Cup win etc the team that ultimately wins it will have profitted from some fortutious circumstance at some stage in the tourament.

What separates the three mentioed above who are being labelled 'lucky' from the likes of Manchester United in 99, Argentina in '78 & '86, Arsenal in '89, Porto in '04, Brazil in '98, Germany in '90............and so on and so on.....

Liverpool are in the final on merit its not as if they have had it easy Leverkusen, Juve and Chelsea and not favourites in any of those ties. It makes no odds who you play and when you play them in the Champions league coz at some stage you will have to meet the best in order to win it. Everton could win it next season but they could also flop in it we won't know til then but Liverpool have proved they can do it in it.

There would be no point to football if teams never got lucky & biggest & best teams away got to finals & won titles.

Its a mild humour and is in fact correct. He is however playing on the humour because I'm sure AC Milan haven't got to the final hoping their opponents are as good or better than them. They want to win it and they don't care how its achieved. After the performance against PSV whick was in stark contrast to performances against Inter Milan and some MUFC team they'll be happy it is Liverpool.

Liverpool are one of the great European and even World Clubs. They may not be one of the best for the last 14 years but they are still one of the biggest. Lets hope Nottingham Forest can return to the pinnacle of the game. I'm going to go over next season to see them. They could be playing Yeovil Town!!!!!!!!!
