Rovers ready to 'roll out the carpet'

It may not be red, but Sligo Rovers will be delighted to be 'rolling out the carpet' at the Showgrounds in the near future.

Following the arrival of the all-weather pitch carpet in six containers from the Mondo factory in Spain, work will shortly re-commence on laying the club's new state of the art facility.

It is expected that the work will take in the region of ten weeks to complete, so the club have targeted mid July for the opening.

"This facility will provide year-round training for the Sligo Rovers senior and youth team, and will also generate income through hire to local clubs/groups. The full size playing area has been approved by UEFA for competitive fixtures, and it can also be divided into three sizeable training/playing areas," explained a spokesperson.

Having made the decision in 2003 to provide an all weather pitch, the club opted to buy the best all weather carpet on the market, an investment that will cost in the region of €600,000. Grant assistance in the sum of €300,000 has been committed by the Department of Sport.

Consulting Engineers for the project are Horgan Lynch & Partners, who were also project managers for the stand development. Following a tender process the contract was awarded to Mondo/Haffey, who have years of experience in installing these facilities around the country.

With the recent decision by Sligo Borough Council to construct a new boundary wall, the club is confident that its ambition to make the Showgrounds the premier ground in the country is on target.

Conor our all weather pitch is seperate to the main pitch. The all-weather is situated to the rear of the Jinks Avenue Stand (blue seats )
