Just seen on Aertel that Doc Carroll has died. May he rest in peace. There is a football connection. Doc was Commercial Manager (or some such post) for Athlone Town a few years back. His biggest hit was Old Man Trouble back in the 1960s, backed by a very young Maxi, Dick and Twink. It was an old Fats Domino song, I think.
Last time I saw him was in a local hotel, back in the 1980s, where he did a version of the old Lionel Richie chestnut "Hello" and delivered a note for nore take on the guitar solo in that song. Didn't know he was even a guitar player. I hope it was him playing, anyway, 'cos I was p$$ed at the time.
Maybe the Athlone Town footiepersons might like to add a note or two...
I have heard the Old Man Trouble record one of the better efforts by the Showband heads... RIP Doc
