    Ebay Buyer's Liability

Kid wants to buy a jazzy mobile phone from the UK on ebay. Price looks too good to be true and I suspect that it is stolen, but have no way of knowing. If he buys, and it is later proven that the phone was stolen property, is he caught for giving it back? Ebay support forums do not go there.

I think - I could be wrong - that explicit preknowledge isn't a factor in receiving stolen goods, which is the crime the kid would be charged with. I think it runs more along the lines of "if it's too good to be true, you must have been suspicious, therefore you must have known they were stolen", sort of fing.

Easiest way to find out is to ask a Garda, without giving them context.

Most stolen phones nowadays get their IMEI numbers ( unique to each handset) blocked when its reported stolen - phone is useless unless its unblocked -
buy and sell is a better option as you can arrange to meet the person and test the handset first before paying for it

I thought if you buy stolen goods have no comeback if gardai conviscate the goods - doesn't matter if you knew stolen or not.
