    Mark Herrick retires ?

According to one of the players, Mark Herrick announced his retirement from Eircom League football after the defeat to Limerick. According to the senior player, Mark cited the wear and tear of weekly football and abuse from an element of the clubs supporters as his reasons.

Whatever one thinks of Marks football ability at the present time, he has given the club some service, and I hope he reconsiders his decision.

thats a sad day for football, not just for mark himself. Hope he reconsiders, I was looking forward to seeing him at the cross for galway in the premier division before he retired. best of luck to him anyway, whatever he does. Really top fella, sound as they come and a great laugh too. In fact, I think he still owes me a pint................

    Pity

when I first started going to United regularly Mark was possibly the best midfielder in the country.

Unfortunately since the accident he hasn't been the same player but always gave his best.
I phoned the speaking clock to hear a voice speak, it said - "At the tone you will be very much alone"

    the personalised abuse

that has been dished out to Mark and other players both at matches and on the message boards has crossed the line and last weeks jeering and cheering in terryland when he was substituted was totally out of order.

Mark was a great servant to united and hopefully a few clowns will not force him to retire as ive said before we have little or no choice in central midfield and losing mark is a blow we can ill afford.

    Others should follow Herrick

If this story is true then I think some other players
should do the decent thing and follow Mark.

yes it's definitely true, Mark Herrick has retired. It was mentioned on Galway Bay FM this morning as well.
Best of luck to him for the future and thanks for all the years he has given to United.

If Mark has called it a day because of what some supporters said about him here or just booing him, well that is just sad! If a player is not able to take a bit of stick when he is playing probably the worst football ever then good luck to him, very unprofessional from my point of view.

When your own so called supporters cheer amd laugh

when you are substituted id say youve every right to give it up.Ive said before the level of personalised abuse meted out to Mark and other players has crossed the line of acceptability and those who lead it should take a long hard look at themselves. Mark has always given his all for GUFC despite coming back from a career threatening injury and deserves at the very least the respect 0f all United fans.

Are you sure the cheers were towards Mark

    Red face

Its sad to see mark go but in saying that i think it was ineitable, he was coming to the end of his playing days and this was reflected in his recent performances. Although Mark always gave it his all, he just wasnt good enough at this level. As regards the abuse he got from fans, there is no excuse for it, but it should be water of a ducks back to experienced players such as mark. All the best to him

Everybody respects Mark and how successful his life (work and playing) has been and hope that it may continue for many more. But everybody has a right to there opinion and if Mark doesn't like it he should confront those people. They (like myself) put a large amount of money towards the club one season after another and they deserve better from the team on the field than what they have been seeing for the past couple of seasons.

Its a pity to see him go but as jacobean said it was sort of inevitable, he is just not as mobile as he used to be. Anyone know if he is staying on in some sort of coaching capacity?

    Herrick parts company with Galway

eircom League First Division club Galway United have been dealt a blow with the news that experienced midfielder Mark Herrick, who has started seven of the Tribesmen’s eight league games to date, has parted company with the western club.

Herrick first joined Galway in 1993 and, after a five-year spell at Cork City, returned to Terryland Park in 2001.
