    Talking Biggest Wasters XI

GK: Massimo Taibi; Error prone goalkeeper. Pity Alex didn't keep him on a long term contract.
RB: Earl Barrett; One of the worst ever England right backs.
CB: Alan Kernaghan; If Ireland conceded a goal, it was usually his fault.
CB: Ramon Vega; could hit the target-past his own keeper.
LB: Djimi Traore: That goal for Burnley.
RM: Bruno Cheyrou; The Next Zidane on arrival to Liverpool? More like Fat Les.
CM: William Prunier; Joined M******ter United on the recommendation of Eric Cantona. The rest as they say is history.
CM: Alex Nyarko; Even Everton fans ran onto the pitch to vent their fury on this guy.
LM: Marco Boogers: Arrived to West Ham in a blaze of glory. Led the life of a Traveller and was never heard of again.
    CF: Stan Collymore; Mentally unstable.
CF: Pierre Van Hooidonk; Tantrum thrower at Notts Forest.

Manager: Graham "Turnip" Taylor; Do I not like that. Hey linesman, you just cost me my f*cking job.

quinten fortune has had a good international carrer and has featured a lot for Man U when not injured in a vairety of positions.
Karel Poborsky is one of the greatest players to play for the Czech Rep, captaining them when they were one of the best teams in the world.
Diego Forlan has scored in the WC and is the 2nd highest scorer in La Liga last time I checked.
Ole Gunnar scored the winner in the CL final!

You watch too much Premiership Ollie!

Jermain Pennant is the one who is currently annoying me along with the 'Madrid ponies'.
As I say, we're just young & a bit nieve.

It's Scheidt actually. Has there ever been a more appropriately surnamed soccer player in World history?

he scored in the world cup?so has gary breen.
though fair enough he is doing the business in spain but i was just basing my comments on what i've seen of him.

Ahh, CTID, setting me right again. Blinking UCD crowd - always looking down on us poor UCG post grads!!
I must check some old copies of World Soccer - there were some great names/tossers in past teams - just cannot think of them right now.
Here's one from the past - Duncan or Dunky McKay- Scottish player/manager for Athlone Town at some stage in the seventies. Lasted ONE GAME and then prompyly disappeared to Australia! There simply is not a word in the dictionary to decribe how brutal he was.

Lothar Matthaus, great that he was, came over in 2000 and joined the Metrostars after the European Championships. Played two games and never broke a sweat which is difficult not to do even if you're just watching the game during the summer here. Sure enough he gets injured and convinces the Metrostars he has to rehab in Europe. Cameras caught him the next week lying on the beach in St. Tropez with some babe and getting his "rehab".
He did come back a few weeks later and did try a little harder during the final 10-12 games. But the damage was already done and got a swift kick in the arse back to Germany once the season was over. I really blame the Metrostars management for getting the big ass in the first place.

A couple of americans are guilty of the term wasters too...Landon Donovan for instance, originally went to Bayer Leverkusen at 16 got homesick and was loaned back to San Jose. He did well and eventually this year he went back to Leverkusen played some games but then had that nightmare against Liverpool in the Champions League and that was that. Back to MLS two weeks later, this time with LA. He's got great talent but for whatever reason, homesick for California, bad German girls or whatever, he wasted a couple of good opportunities in Germany.

Also Clint Mathis joined Hannover last year from the Metrostars, starts off great and score 4-5 goals in his first few games. Then goes off the boil and is dropped. Eventually he gets another chance and came on as a sub when Hannover were losing a game. He duly scores a cracker for 30 yards out, goes to the dugout and gives the coach the finger and says 'F-you' in front of all the cameras. Needless to say that was the last he played for Hannover and this year left to join the new team in Salt Lake City. He was always very tempermental, endlessly mouthing off to refs, he is quite a head case.

in fairness, I think the title "biggest wasters" means people who had talent but didnt use it to their advantage. Phil Babb never had talent to waste.

He played out of his skin in the 0-0 in Copenhagen. Think he did well in the
1-1 in Belfast as well. I honestly don't recall him putting in bad performances for us. Not blessed with huge talent but what he had, he gave for the cause.

    DENMARK 0-0 IRELAND

Ireland: Bonner; Irwin, Kernaghan, Moran, Phelan; Houghton, Keane, Townsend (capt.), McGoldrick; Quinn, Aldridge. Sub: Kelly for Aldridge (71 mins.)

    Metrostars,

Lothar Matthaeus was about 67 when he played in USA FFS.
He had done his time - five World Cups, most appearances ever - 25, He's a legend.
Its only washed up players who sign for the Yankee dollar.

I remember watching Donadoni when he played for the Metrostars back in 96 when I lived there. The guy could not wait to get out of the place such was the standard.

    That's not the point.

    That was Biscan, not Cheyrou.

Though the team could be managed by Houllier. Quite an incredible number of poor players signed by him!

there was a lanky (italian?) signed from serie a for forest i think it was when they were premiership, he had all the credentials, height, skill, and turned out utter gank. can't think of his name. bogarde must be the biggest ever for the kind of coin he was on at chelsea. beckham for the similar reasons since joining madrid. gazza maybe coz of the booze and georgey best has got to be king in that regard. ole's a legend, almost any club would have him in their squad when fully fit.
