    Cabinteely

Cabinteely’s direct style eventually paid dividends for the home side in Stradbrook last night as Wexford eventually conceded and returned pointless back down the NII to face AFC Wimbledon in Ferrycarrig this afternoon. Manager Brian O’Sullivan started with Corey, Paddy, Sean, Darragh, Andrew, Ricky, Conor, John, Emmet and with Jack and Danny Furlong up front. From the start, Cabinteely began to pump the ball aerially into the Wexford box at every opportunity, but with Darragh O’Connor and Sean Callan doing well to get their heads to everything, it prevented Cabo from creating any real opportunities during the first period. On three minutes, a decent low cross by Cabo forced Corey Chambers to work hard to get to the ball first, and as he cleared, he was fouled by the incoming Cabo attacker and a free-kick was awarded to the away side. Wexford’s only real chance of the first half then followed when Danny Furlong broke free down the right wing, and his shot beat McGuinness in the Cabo goal but was cleared off the line by the final Cabo defender. As you’d expect from this type of game, a few balls did break to Cabo players as they were headed out of the penalty area by Wexford defenders, but the first-time efforts which ensued from the Cabo players generally threatened Dun Laoghaire harbour more than Corey Chambers’ goal. 0-0 at half-time after a less than inspired first half.

The game changed irretrievably for Wexford early in the second period as Cabo were awarded a free just outside the Wexford penalty area. It might have been a soft free; however, the Wexford wall may have split as Luke Clucas’s shot seemed to find its way low down into the protected side of Wexford’s goal and Cabo were a goal to the good. Cabo then continued to nullify any attacking threat by Wexford as they closed the away side down really well. Changes made by Wexford during this period included the introduction of Nika Arevadze and Danny Doyle with Ryan Nolan being introduced towards the end of the match. Wexford then lost Sean Callan to a straight red with twenty minutes to go as he appeared to lunge two-footed at Cabo’s Keith Dalton. With only ten players, manager Brian O’Sullivan eventually went three at the back and, right at the end, it left space for Cabo’s new Japanese signing with a chance to face Corey Chambers in the Wexford goal in a one-on-one, and he finished neatly to leave Cabo 2-0 ahead at the end. Word at the game was that Shamrock Rovers have recalled Sean Callan from his loan with Wexford, and best of luck to him as he looks to have a decent career ahead. Cabo had a remarkable deal for the game with entry, a free burger and a free pint all for five Euros.
