I had to laugh at the RTE 'experts' Houghton, Dunphy and Giles and their analysis of the game. They haven't a clue between the three of them. What did they expect, Liverpool to come down to London and go gung-ho? They did what they had to do and it's a very good result. They lauded Liverpool for reducing Juve to long balls in Turin, yet tonight they refused to acknowledge their defensive performance, criticising Chelsea's lack of inventiveness instead. Idiots.

This was posted elsewhere. I've decided it's time to show Dunphy up for the clueless pundit that he is - he get's it wrong 90% of the time and Laughing Bill just laps it up. So I'm going to try and keep this thread going after each of his appearances and see what he comes up with.

Last night he predicted before a the game a hard midfield battle (as well as a Chelsea victory of course). At half time he admitted it hadn't been the midfield battle he had anticipated.

He ended the half time "expert analysis" by predicting that it was "inevitable" that Chelsea would score. Full time 0-0.

I too at half time thought Chelsea would score at least twice.

There was no 'midfeild battle' in the first half because Gerard was hiding.

Liverpool up'd their game in the second half.

In fairness neither side played well at all and it was a very disappointing match.

Dunphy did say it would be very tight and a lot of people were expecting a midfield battle type game. I though the way Liverpool were defending Chelsea would score at least one in the second half, but they didnt play at all in the second 45.

Dunphy can dose out the old vitriol a bit much but often he's the only one to cut through the Sky centred hype that surrounds the premiership. I dont agree with him alot of the time particularly when he's kissing Keane/Fergies asses but just because you dont agree with him or what he says about your team doesnt mean hes always wrong.

Ah Dunphy is a good laugh, and the boys obviously bounce off each other - I think its hilarious stuff to watch - always look forward to it. It would be a poorer show without him imo.

They never gave Liverpool any credit for their second half performance. Liverpool were superb in the second half, they reduced Chelsea to nothing. Instead Dunphy was more interested in trying to be a comedian, ridiculing a few of the Liverpool players. Garcia was very poor, as was Gerrard, but aside from those two I thought everybody else played fine, including Traore and Hyypia who he lambasted. I didn't see Joe Cole burning Traore once in the second half, or Hyypia making any mistakes. Dunphy is 90% box office bull****, 10% expert analysis. Ray Houghton hasn't a clue. Giles is good, but always see's the negative side of things and tends to over-analyse things, he's a bit depressing. The RTE panel is over-rated, only Giles and Jim Beglin are worth listening to.

They're the exact same with Ireland games.

It's this sort of comment that really irritates me. Only in Ireland would we stomach someone who uses the air waves to vent his spleen and wage personal vendettas against the Irish manager or anyone or anything that he doesn't agree with. Yet it's called "a good laugh". He castigated the standard of the Liverpool players yet he wouldn't have been fit to tie their shoe laces and they beat Juventus, one of the Italian teams he adores. Here is the sort of poison he spread and continues to spread. It was before the Romania game away in 1997 on RTE and he's commenting on Mick Mc dropping senior players like ALdridge (then playing in Tranmere reserves) in favour of younger players:

O'Herlihy: "But let's say..."

Dunphy: "Listen, listen. I've spoken to senior pros ((presumably the ones Mick had dropped)). This guy hasn't got a clue what he's at".

Giles: "I agree with that" ((Great balance as ever in the RTE Panel))

Dunphy: "The whole set up stinks. This is going to be another EOin Hand job. The whole set up stinks and he deserves plenty of stick. We will be slughtered today. He's a manipulator of public opinion ((pot and kettle come to mind). (He then goes on to predict 4-0 to Romania).

Obviously the phone lines were hopping to which Laughing Bill O'Herliny replies:

Laughing Bill: "It's extremely irritating to give objective comment and then at the end of the day to be accused of being unpatriotic"

Objective - what a laugh. The most subjective comments you could imagine by someone who resented McCarthy from the beginning because he got the job over his buddy Kinnear. A vicious and libellous attack on the national Irish manager by both panelists on the national station and it's called objective.

As for the game, those of you who remember, we out played Romania, lost 1-0 and Keane missed a peno. It was an excellent performance. Later on:

Dunphy: "It has been a much better performance than I expected. There is nothing wrong with the commitment of the players except Roy Keane ((pre autobiography deal)) who hasn't been in the game as much as he should".

So has it been for more years that I can bear. Dunphy calling it wrong and personally attacking people, Giles agreeing 95% of the time (Saipan excepted) and Laughing Bill, a total dimwit when it comes to footballing matters, unable or unwilling to contradict. Grrrrrrrrrrrr but a "great laugh"

And then we change our spots after the 1-0 home win over Holland:

Dunphy: "An incredible achievement by the manager and players.....Credit to the manager and to the atmosphere and to the family feeling, the feeling of belonging, he has created.....That is why the manager and coaches deserve credit. That's a cumalitive thing and very, very impressive.....A vindication for the manager who's had a rough time ".

I remember thinking at the time, what a hypocrite but it wasn't long alas before the gloves were off again.

But sure he's "a great laugh" and we love him.

Lighten up and get a sense of humour will ye - if you take him too seriously thats your problem. Easy solution, switch over if ye don't want to listen to him!!

The best story about Dunphy was the one Liam Touhy told.

Liam and Eamon where having a chat about how well the U-18s did in the World Cup (85 in Russia i think) and Eamon asked how did Liam stop the players getting bored in the hotel.

So Liam said they played games, bingo, quizes all the usual stuff.

Touhy also says that they had a competition to see who could name the WORST EVER XI to play for Ireland.

Dunphy joked - "I hope I was in it, Liam"

Touhy replied - "In it, you were the fcuking captain".

Just cannot listen to McCoist. I just cannot do it. I generally like the commentary on BBC but cannot and I mean I cannot abide Motson. I never liked his commentary on games. For me Brian Moore was just a legend. That voice was perfect for the game, a little like Murray Walker with motor sport. But Motson for me is unbearable. Wouldn't mind but for FIFA 2004 and 2005 I think they combined the two for commentary. The worst combination.

I enjoy Bill. Giles knows his stuff. How have they roped Trevor Stevens in for some analysis. Dunphy brings a bit of life to things but what can they do.They can only predict the result and analyse the play.

I think its hilarious that he rips the p**s out of himself over his own playing career !!

He does this so that people can't say 'What the fcuk does he know anyway?', because that is exactly what football people are asking, and Dunphy knows it. So he uses this reverse psychology and instead you have people saying he makes great tv\entertainment. If you want entertainment, watch Sky 1 or E4. What i'd like is a genuine expert who knows his stuff to compliment Giles. Dunphy is just a clown there for the comedy value. This is why he wasn't sacked after his drunken appearance at the last World Cup. He wasn't sacked because he equals ratings. He comes on RTE, all swagger and poses, all controversial, firing off OTT and sensationalist broadsides and opinions everywhere, yet what has Eamonn Dunphy ever achieved in football to give him licence to do this? Nothing is the answer. Dunphy achieved less than the likes of Eddie McGoldrick and Alan Kernaghan, yet he's some kind of expert? FFS..... Not to mention how he used to contradict himself every second week on The Last Word, his many libel cases etc

What i'd really love to see though is Dunphy to be put on a panel alongside the condescending John Toshack, the arrogant Alan Hansen and the smug Mark Lawernson. Now that would be entertainment. I'd give odds of 1\3 of it ending up in an on-air punch up or a shouting match at the very least. Imagine Toshack constantly interrupting and correcting Dunphy

Not really the same thing. Mourinho has been a coach since he was in his teens, and has worked his way up at major clubs. Because he has been coaching all his career, and has experience from behind the scenes at the likes of Barcelona, he has it down to a tee and is an excellent coach. Coaching has always been his profession, not playing. And as a coach he is top class in his profession. So if Mourinho comments on top level football, you listen, because he knows his stuff and has earned the right to speak with authority on it.

Dunphy on the other hand was a player, a pretty sh1t one at that. That was his profession, and he was crap at it. So I think there's a bit of a difference in Jose Mourinho talking about football, and Eamonn Dunphy talking about football. Why should anyone listen to Dunphy, especially when he is commenting on European Cup semi-finals? What the fcuk would Dunphy know about that level of football? If RTE brought in a mediocre championship player on the CL panel, would you respect his analysis and opinions on the games, because he's played against, er..........Plymouth Argyle?! Would you fcuk, you'd probably laugh at him, which is the same reason I laugh at Dunphy. As well as the fact that he's a clown.

If anybody can't see through Dunphy after all this time, well maybe you're a clown as well. If it takes one to know one, it takes one to like or respect one as well
