    WYW v Peamount

Deserved win by Peamount by the slimmest of margins in Ferrycarrig tonight and who now have one and a half hands on the league trophy as a result. However, the margin was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests as Wexford never got going, particularly in the first half where they never displayed the demeanour of a team looking to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Wexford began with Sophie, Nicola, Lauren Dwyer, Lolly, Becky, Blessing, Edel, Lauren Kelly, Aisling and with Rianna up front. Wexford began slowly and drifted away further from the pace of the game as the half progressed. On four minutes, Amber Barrett for the Peas pulled a shot wide when coming in on the Wexford goal from the right. On the quarter hour, a Peas free-kick went a yard wide of Sophie Lenehan’s left-hand post. Another Peas effort on goal then clipped the outside of the post and away and Sophie Lenehan had to push another Barrett effort on the Wexford goal around the post for a corner. On 33 minutes, the Peamount goal came when Ryan-Doyle looped a volley over Lenehan’s head and into the top of the net. Wexford’s excellent Lauren Dwyer then blocked Aine O’Gorman’s goal-bound effort for a corner and a Peas free-kick hit the outside of the Wexford post and wide. First decent effort on goal by Wexford ended the half when the isolated Rianna Jarrett up front for Wexford clipped a free a yard over the Peamount bar. 1-0 to Peamount at half-time.

Wexford knew they had to improve in the second half and notched three corners at the start of the second period but nothing came of them. Lauren Kelly of Wexford subsequently blasted a left-footed shot a couple of yards wide. Chances were still scarce for Wexford, however, although one fell to Aisling Frawley who stabbed a free header wide of the Peamount post. Subs during this period for Wexford were Vanessa Ogbonna, Katrina Parrock and Ciara Rossiter. Wexford did show some urgency in the final ten minutes, and came close to scoring when McAloon in the Peamount goal was almost caught out by a bouncing ball, but Edel Kennedy of Wexford was able only to smack the rebound off Peamount’s crossbar. So, 1-0 to Peamount at the end with the away team generally showing much more intensity and sharpness on the night.
