    No media organization worth its salt can neglect its public service function. Even in the unlikely event of the IT and the Indo etc. admitting that their sole aim in life is to sell newspapers, RTE can't say all they want to to is maximise audience. It's a public service broadcaster, or is supposed to be. That's why we pay a TV licence, and why it's ironic that Setanta and TV3 do more, however paltry their efforts, to promote domestic football.

    In fairness, if you asked any Irish bookmakers you would be surprised by the amount of people who place bets on even the most obscure games in Britai. I'm sure they would read match reports and previews.

    That was relevant at the time, they don't keep going on about how poor Real must be to be employing a striker who couldn't make the grade at Athletico do they?
