    Wexford FC v Cabinteely

Effective performance by a big, fit & powerful away side in Ferrycarrig tonight as Cabinteely deservedly took the three points although Wexford continue to improve. Wexford started with what looked like a 4-4-1-1 with Corey in goal, a back four of Sean, Owen, Hopper and Lee, a midfield four of Danny Doyle, Ryan, Paddy and Emmet, and with Crokey playing behind Jack Doherty up front. First half was the better as both sides played their part. Wexford’s Crokey had the first chance as he chipped over the Cabo bar when the ball fell to him just outside the Cabo penalty area. Wexford then had a huge chance to take the lead on 13 minutes when Jack Doherty used his skill to get clean through but his low shot was cleared with his legs by McGuinness in the Cabo goal. Cabo were playing very directly and it led to the first goal on 17 minutes when a long throw into the Wexford area was only headed away as far as the penalty spot where Manley was able to volley home with a low shot to put Cabo ahead. Wexford’s Owen McCormack then got a yellow for a tackle. Chances then fell to Crokey of Wexford and Waters of Cabo as they ran at the opposing keepers from tight angles, but neither could finish. Emmet Nugent and Crokey then had shots for Wexford but couldn’t keep them on target. Just before the break, Cabo’s Jack Watson beat the offside flag which never came and finished neatly past Chambers in the Wexford goal for 2-0 to Cabo at half-time.

Second half was disappointing as Wexford never really threatened to score to get back into the game. After an early Cabo free which went just wide of the Wexford post, Wexford’s skipper, Hopper Kenny, limped off and was replaced at the back by Darragh O’Connor. Nika Arevadze then came on for Wexford as manager Brian O’Sullivan tried to get width into the Wexford side. Game ended as a contest just after the hour mark when Owen McCormack got a second yellow for a tackle inside Cabo’s own third. Wexford didn’t threaten McGuinness from then on other than a shot by Nugent which went straight at the Cabo netminder but, to be fair to Wexford, Cabo didn’t threaten Chambers much in the Wexford goal either. So, 2-0 to Cabo at full-time but a decent effort from Wexford who brought on Sean Roche late on as a third sub. With the better weather, at least 300 at the game.
