Irish fans called to contribute to collective memoir

    February 18, 2005

Fans of the boys in green over the past 20 years are invited to contribute a short story to a new collection of memories of supporting the Irish senior side at home and abroad over the past 18 years.

The book, scheduled to be published by Beyond Athenry Publishing later this year, is timed to coincide with the much-hoped-for return of the Green Army to Germany for the 2006 World Cup finals – 18 years after the great breakthrough by Jack Charlton’s side on the same turf at Euro ’88.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

There was on done a few years ago called 'Whats the story?'. I think it was around 1993..It has to be said it wasn't the best...The stories and pictures weren't very colourful to say the least. Some of the people in it look like freaky monsters. Anyone got this book or wrote for it? Eh Davy Keaogh? I reckon if this new book is done well and those that write in take there time it could be really good. Its advertised in the brochure for I,keano aswell.

I thought 'Whats the story' was a great collection of stories to be honest. Agreed it was lacking in colour, but as it was the first attempt (I think) at this sort of thing I thought it was a great attempt. Compiled by a few members of the Dublin Supporters Branch of the ROISSC.

Think the opening story is from Jack Charlton himself and refers to the guy who flies to Italy from Australia for the Romania game - he got slaughtered before the game - slept right through it - then was spotted with his suitcase the next day heading to the airport on his way home back to Australia!!!!
I thought you were off the drink Ronnie?

"No, I drink to help me mind my own business....can I get you one? (c) Ronnie Drew

Saw a fella do the exact same thing in Japan for the Cameroon game. Fell down the aisle past me right at kick-off only to be carried out fully comatose 5 mins later. I had to shake my head at the blatant waste of money flying halfway round the world for such an event only to sleep right thru it. Some people.
And you ask me to help you??!! Man is evil!!!! Capable of nothing but destruction!

Great idea but who reaps the profits. They should be handed out to those whose stories are printed.

Nah its a nice trick when too lazy to write a book - get the fans to do it for free.

I found that What's The Story focussed far too much on Italia 90 - David O'Leary and his penalty and then Schallchi etc etc etc ... it would be nice to read something from the fans' perspective which did not just focus on the same game / tournament
