What the hell is going on with this guy? Two days ago he was resigning to try to form a new coalition; yesterday he definitely wasn't resigning, because that harks back to old Italian politics; today he's resigning again. The man's a scumbag, now he's starting to look like a nutty scumbag.

I don't really have a clue about italian politics but apparently Berlusconi has a lot of support because he a businessman & not a politician. Seems standrad politicans are too cosy in italy giving pardons opponents & getting similar favours back in kind. I always get the impression that Italy (like France) are run by the unions (Italy has something like 25 public holidays compared with 10 in Ireland) & seems Berlusconi has broken some of that power.
His media ownership in combination with Prime Ministership is serious dodgy though.
Isn't the story he wants to reshuffle the Government after falling out with the former Facists. He wants to basically do it whilst staying in power, Italian President told him he must resign and re-form the Government. That was probably the confusion. He's resigned now, but is expected to only take a day or two to be back.
Nearest comparison to make, would be Murdoch being elected Prime Minister of the UK - with Sky, The Sun and The Times to back him up. He has enough power over the puppet Blair that it probably not worth the effort anyway...

That makes sense but none of the stories I saw mentioned it. Got a source?Originally Posted by Macy

Yeah, I heard that as well- apparently its the law. He can't just form a new government straight off- he has to resign first and then form oneOriginally Posted by Macy
That's only if he wants to form a new coalition though, there was nothing stopping him staying on. In fact that's what he said he was going to do the second day, i.e. fight off the vote of no-confidence.
