Sorry Eire06 but neither you nor Oberleutnant Ratziger of the Luftwaffe are getting off the hook on this one. There's already a concerted attempt to liken his service to der fuerhrer as being akin to a stint in the boy scouts and it aint washing.

He joined or was enlisted in the hitler youth at 14 (that's 1941) and saw at least some active service from 1943 onwards (two full years before the war ended).

Now I'm not going to condemn him for not being a conchie (there were conchies in Hitlers Germany and they got a torrid time). Plenty of good people were too scared to stand up and say I'm not fighting for this.

Plenty more didn't support Hitler but weren't going to sit back while Bomber Harris powderised german cities needlessly either.

BUT -this guy has nearly two years of active service and we know relatively little about what he or his unit got up to in that time.

But it was no boy scout trip -no FCA-esque larking about either. He wore that grey uniform with the little silver eagle dangling a swastika on his chest. FACT.

Its not a black and white story that the ignorant people on this site seem to think it is, They think that the fact he was a member he must have committed terrible crimes and supported Hitler and that he was a Nazi...

I like to find out the whole story before accusing, innocent before proven guilty.. but some catholic church hating people on this site prefer to hang him before they have all the facts of the case

Never accused the man of being a Nazi -just pointed out that there's a lot of time to be accounted for, a lot of gaps to be filled in and a bit of a cloud over him ...though I'm sure he'll clear it all up expeditiously.

Pick the odd man out - Oscar Schindler, Joe Ratzinger, C. Montgomery Burns.

Monty Burns is the only one who doesn't play down his involvment with the nazis.

id do away with the papacy and the church itself.id remove all religious objects from public life,and confiscate their land and assets for the better good of the citizens of this country.

also i would ban any religious teachings to children under the age of 18.let them make up their own minds (hopefully at this stage theyl have enough sense to see thru the fascist sham that is oprganised religion) instead of brainwashing them while young

Accusing him of being a nazi,attempting to blacken the name of the new pope,ah come off it.It was posted after Owlsfan tried to blacken the name of the new pope by accusing him of hunting celebrities for photos .A joke you may call it.Would call it ignorance if I said just because hes a german but the fact that he has a history with Hitler youth would make the joke in some way relevant not that a joke ever has to be relevant.If you are a religous person and it offended you,I apologise but how about lightening up

The new Pope was in the Hitler Youth. In 1943 he was sent to a factory that built aircraft engines where there were anti-aircraft guns to protect it. He helped with reloading the damn things. FACT.

By the way, the new Pope should be Stephen Hawking.
