    Wexford FC v Bray

Wexford gave their season the much-needed kick-start it required as they profited from staying in the game to enable them to take the three points against Bray. Wexford started with Corey, Owen, Darragh, Sean, Lee, Danny Doyle, Ryan, Paddy, Emmet and with Danny Furlong and Jack Doherty up front. Wexford started reasonably well but without troubling Sava in the Bray goal. First decent shot was on seven minutes by Bray but it went a yard wide. On eleven minutes, Bray had a header over the bar and were doing real damage down both Wexford wings. Midway through the half Bray had a shout for a peno but nothing was given by referee Mannix. On 27 minutes, Dean O’Halloran got a yellow for Bray for a tackle on Wexford’s Lee Costello. On the half hour, Bray were unlucky not to score when the last Wexford defender managed to back-heel the ball off the Wexford goal- line when facing the wrong way. Bray well in the ascendancy up till that point but Wexford showed that they could make a contribution to the game as a slick move enabled Danny Furlong to finish but it was ruled out for offside. A minute later, Sava had to clear with his legs to prevent Wexford’s Emmet Nugent from scoring and a late Bray shot just over the cross-bar finished the half. 0-0 at half-time with Wexford fans happy that their team was still in the game for a change.

Second half continued in much the same vein and Sean Callan of Wexford got a yellow for a tackle. Then, on 54 minutes, Wexford got the goal they needed when a ball was pumped back into the Bray box after a Wexford free, and when it was partially cleared, Emmet Nugent hit a looping volley to the top corner to give Sava no chance and Wexford were in front. This gave the home side a huge lift and Danny Furlong nearly profited from the lifting of the shackles from Wexford as he hit a left-footed effort just the other side of the post. On the hour mark, Bray nearly got the equalizer with a good move from a corner but it got deflected just over Wexford’s cross-bar by a home defender. Danny Furlong and Paddy Cahill then got yellows as they tried to stem the Bray tide and it was followed by a Bray yellow. Wexford got the insurance goal on 83 minutes when Bray attempted a quick free-kick in the middle of the pitch but it was pounced on by Jack Doherty who drove forward unchallenged and smacked an unstoppable half-volley past Sava. One decent parry by Corey Chambers in the Wexford goal then secured a good clean-sheet for the home side as subs Sean Kelly and Andrew Farrell came on to bolster the home team’s efforts. Best for Wexford on the night were the back four with Jack Doherty working tirelessly up front but my man of the match was Paddy Cahill who was hugely impressive in the engine-room for Wexford. About 300 or so at the game with decent support from Bray.
