Cobh Ramblers Youth Team were beaten 3-0 by an impressive Wembley Rovers team in the FAI Youths Cup Quarter Final in rain soaked Limerick yesterday.
In tough conditions both team played excellent football and Wembley lead at half time by 1-0. Ramblers came out with all guns blasing in the second half and should have equalised when Paul O'Keeffe shot wide from close range. Then came the defining moment of the game when Michael O'Shea was blatently tripped in the area but the referee chose not to award the penalty and from the resulting clearance Wembley scored with a second headed goal. Rams continued to create openings but found the Wembley goalkeeper inspired as he made 4 very impressive saves. In the final quarter Rams threw caution to the wind and played a 4-3-3 formation which left them vunerable on the break and Wembley scored a third from such a situation.
Wembley were a very impressive team who last year won the Under 17 equivalent and it will take some team to deny them in this competition. As for Ramblers the management and players can hold their heads high with some very encouraging displays from Tim O'Shea, Eddie Nolan, Ian Stack, Micky O'Shea and Sean Daly. Seven of the starting eleven players are underage again next year.
