Or is there ambiguity in the rules that has been highlighted by Luxembourg and needs to be eradicated, one way or the other?
There are not many countries like Ireland who allow 2nd generation foreign born to apply for citizenship without residency requirements. And the FIFA statutes are already quite generous in allowing for a player with a grandparent connection to circumvent the 5 year residency requirement.
As it stands now based on precedent, there is no ambiguity in the FIFA rules, Luxembourg have first call on Ryan as he had not applied for Irish nationality (based on his one Irish granny).

We're not sure about Robinson, we don't know exactly when Robinson became an Irish national or did his application to switch just fall outside FIFA radar of scrutiny as the English FA were not objecting? Or when his application landed on the FIFA desk, did it come with a huge red stamp on the cover page "Already Approved" - signed JD.

Crowley probably occupies the same questionable area as Johansson, but FIFA have not answered either way on his application yet so there's still an element of hope, albeit a dimming element.

The moral is, don't ever leave the Irish set up.

Was that Crowley who crossed for Brum's winner last night? Deft touch, whoever's it was.

Edit: Sorry, just saw Crafty's post on the previous page.

Robinson definitely fits into the criteria where Johansson and Crowley do. He played in competitive football for England before having an Irish passport because he certainly didn't have one back then. I'd imagine there's a good few players who fall in that category who made the switch. FA typically don't care because these players aren't good enough to be a blip on the English radar.

This decision is bigger than Crowley and Johansson though. It affect all future players who have an Irish grandparent. Johansson is an idiot for playing in that throw away Luxembourg U21 qualifier though. Was absolutely not worth his effort or risk.

I think it was more than the deft touch, he saw the assist in the happening and wriggled himself into the position where he could deliver the cross.

"Idiot" is a bit harsh. Poor tone.

Maybe it is but he's clearly never had any intention of playing for them, with Sweden being his 2nd choice. Playing in that game achieved nothing for him other than muddy the waters for his international future.

I think he played under 17 competitively for Luxembourg a few years earlier so playing 21 s for them didn't make any difference he still had his 1 switch available as he would have understood it having the right to Irish citensenship as a formality when he applied for it.

Randolph makes an unbelievable save at the start of this video, but should really have saved the first goal. Great cross by Crowley alright.

Good question. I never got around to asking after the last unfortunate update on Ryan Johansson.
