    Dunno, but the main theory behind the origins of the name 'Eire' is that it is a derivative of the Gaelic/Celtic word 'iarthar' or 'iar' meaning west.

    Interesting to see that Britain was therefore the point of reference used when naming our country....! West Brits indeed !

    you could also say that ireland was the western edge of the known world at the time. i'd imagine the name dates pre discovery of america and that the world is infact round. europe, the middle east and africa were the known world at the time.
