    What for 'The Blades'?

Is there any use for such a tongue-in-cheek nickname in any of Limerick FC's circles? I've been asked to put up this poll by a few people so here goes...

I think unofficially in a sort of a fanzine/ultras kind of way it might work. But its just a bit too self-deprecating to be an official thing IMO

Well, Stab City isn't the truth.

I think the EVA piece at St Marys cathedral is excellent. It capture sthe situaiton perfectly. Up close (when you are there) it is clear how much the city has going for it. From a distance all people think is 'Stab City'. I can see the argument about being laugh at the representation but that is not how it will appear to many. It will appear as glorifying in the reputation. Football supporters world over have to get away from stereotypes and this is crazy IMO. It can perceived as threatening. It can perceived as inconsiderate or bad taste. Why bother? People being stabbed is not funny. People calling Limerick stab city is not funny. I know the guys talking about this here are raising it in good faith but think about how it could be painted outside of these circles. And a couple of yahoos start shouting "We are the Blades" at a group of visiting fans. Suddenly the subtlety of thehumour may be lost.

It's good to see that you recognise that too LFCIE!

Yes, its a hard one. And whenever someone outside of Limerick (because its only ever outside of Limerick) finds out I'm from Limerick and responds with "Oh, Stab City" as if he had just thought of it himself and its the first time anyone has ever said it to me I do sometimes want to "bite back and gave two fingers to those who glorify in putting the city down". However, the best response I think is to ignore it - make the people who say it and think feel as small and unfunny as possible. The worst reaction is to go along with it because it gives the people who say it and think it license to continue on and say it to something else and perpetuate the stupidity.

There's an early morning rant - now I can get to work!

Of course you think it's funny, as you have something to say about this and every other snide remark about Limerick, I wish you'd take you and your smart Ass out of the Limerick pages once and for all. Fool

I support the points made by LFCIE, I think the name Blades should have no association with Limerick FC or the supporters club.

Its easy to appreciate the dark humour of such a name amongst ourselves, but to football fans outside Limerick it implies to them that we are quite accepting of the term 'Stab City' and the stigma that comes with it. While some people will get the joke unfortunately we live in a ignorant world. So when I see comments like these...
I think it's time that Limerick bit back and gave two fingers to those who glorify in putting the city down.
...do you honestly think then that we should provide these ignoramuses with ammo to go shooting their mouths off because if we start referring to ourselves as the Blades thats whats going to happen. So in all seriousness if anyone has a problem with the term 'Stab City' then why would you be supportive of using the name Blades? It will only add to the naivety of some of our fans who appear to believe everything that they read or hear as one so willingly displayed,
i think its funny , its about time people from limerick started to be able to laugh at them selves instead of getting so offended by the truth
I cannot see anything positive coming out of the use of such a name as the Blades nor at the time of writing this has anyone yet offered a definitive argument/point advocating the use of it. Like I said at the start I'm strongly against the idea of the Blades and I think it would be a serious mistake.
Limerick 37, its so shiny and new we dare not take the cover off.

To be honest though Nempton I don't think you've offered anything that would change the mind of somebody who wants to use it. I'd use it because at this stage I don't care what somebody from Cork or Dublin or wherever thinks. if they're dumb enough to swallow they hype then I really just pity them.

I think that the reason being mostly given for not using the term is a kinda 'Let's not get up anybody elses noses'. I wouldn't dismiss that view but my attitude is really just to ignore those who think it's great to p1ss on the city by rubbing our noses in the term.

Don't expect any agreement on the issue, the poll is going as I thought it would to be honest. If anything I'm surprised that as many people have advocated the idea as have.

Well Anto, thanks for the reply, You may have lived here for 25 yrs but odds are you weren't born here, hence the Dublin name "ANTO". You are correct in your assumption that you are entitled to comment on Limerick, my apologises for my first thread..but if you feel that strongly about our City ,why put it down ?

The Blades to me sounds like a name a hooligan group of fans would call themselves, like the 'Chelsea headhunters' etc. It doesn't sound right, and I for one would not feel comfortable with or be happy about being a member of a group called 'the blades'. There are groups of fans of EL clubs, mostly Dublin clubs, who like to fight at\before the occasional game. I'm sure some of them would be delighted to see what a group of Limerick fans, self-styled 'the blades', would be made of away from home. To me it's a bad idea and is asking for trouble\attention.

Did you know that Sheffield Wednesday were known as 'The Blades' before they took the nickname of 'The Owls'!

lets see im 25 years old have lived here for 25 years , does it really matter which hospital i was born in a few hours in a hospital outside limerick hardly makes me a blow in .
plus the name anto is a nick name some use nicknames i presume pineapple stu isnt the guy aboves real name .

im not putting it down there is a big differenc between putting it down and telling the truth , which is the worse responce to some one who thinks limerick is dangerous to get all defensive and have a go at them (which makes it look like we have some thing to hide ) or to explain the situation which in every case iv done they have allways understood and visited limerick on the back of my recomendation ,
