Billy Woods of Shamrock Rovers has been named as the eircom/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland Player of the Month for January.

Woods, 28, played a key role for the Hoops in a highly successful first month of 2002 as they consolidated their title challenge with three wins in four eircom League games, as well as advancing to the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup and the semi-finals of the eircom League Cup.

Woods missed one of their five games but he made up for it in the matches in
which he did play, helping himself to four goals. He also weighed in with two
    assists.

The exciting winger began his career at Coventry City as a trainee but, having
failed to break into the first team at Highfield Road, it was at hometown club
Cork City where he really made his name, breaking into the Irish under-21 team.

In the 1994/95 season he was named as the PFAI Young Player of the Year and
earned himself a move to Tranmere Rovers. But a second spell cross-channel
failed to work out as planned; he made more first team appearances in one week
of a loan spell at Blackpool than he did in two years on Merseyside.

After a season with Portadown in the Irish League, Woods joined Rovers in the
summer of 1998 and has been a constant thorn in the side of eircom League
defences ever since. Before Rovers' game with Derry on Thursday night, he had scored 22 goals in 147 eircom League appearances
soccer isn't a matter of life or death its more important than that!!!

Billys spell at open space of Bishopstown was probably the most exciting player at City during the 90's.
