Their goalkeeper was excess to their needs this evening. He could have spent the whole game texting his friends and having a laugh.

If O'Neill had any honour and integrity he'd resign. A manager who oversees relegation in any competition cannot expect to continue in the job. But I'm afraid that his salary is above what he might be offered by a club, and we're his last big pay day. And what kind of club would take him on anyway? Tactics, motivation, organisation - he's a spent force in every department.

Take a lesson from your mentor, Martin: even Clough knew when it was time to walk away. Coincidentally, that was after an avoidable relegation, too.

Hello, hello? What's going on? What's all this shouting, we'll have no trouble here!

He should offer his resignation, and in doing so demonstrate some sense of integrity.

What can one say? If it was the first match in the group, we might have come away happy with a point. Alas it was not and there was no sign of progress on the field other than defensively but with 10 men behind the ball one would expect some progress in that regard. As Brian Kerr has said, the Irish football team is now a hard sell and I even went to the kitchen to make a sandwich without putting the TV on pause - unheard of behaviour up to 12 months ago. With rugby on the up, this makes this harder to swallow and according to my friends at the game there were a lot of chants such as "we are f*ing sh*te" from presumably die hard supporters as well as lots of anti-Delaney stuff but that's another matter. MONKE seems to be losing the fans and with perhaps -20K attendance per game which is around a drop of €1 million in revenue a match, it might eventually not be worthwhile keeping him in the FAI's eyes. However, the lot of the Irish fan is to be optimistic (sometimes too optimistic) and hope that despite all the signs to the contrary, it will be improved. I wouldn't be surprised though at some stage if MON got his marching orders and RK was handed the job for a couple of games (cost savings in not paying him off) to see how he'd get on. I'll be honest though, the last few Irish performances in the 50 years or so I have been following Ireland have been the worst I can remember.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

The last match in which we actually played some nice football wasn’t over a year ago, it was against Poland.

Williams looked composed in midfield and looked for the ball constantly. He’s barely played since.

That's true, Fixer. Now, Poland looked extremely half arsed but at the same time we looked like we were trying to do the right things at least. Denmark weren't exactly at full throttle last night either and we couldn't string two passes together. Williams was a no-brainer for last night, we basically didn't have a midfield and that was clear without any need for hindsight.

RTE primetime have a programme about the management of the FAI at 9.30pm. Hopefully it's the beginning of the end for Delaney.

Well it wasn't very powerful. It was a very quick video followed by an interview with Pat Dolan in which he managed to make very few coherent points. 5 minute segment or so.

This has been a wasted year of friendlies and NL games. Of course low key half baked friendlies are only that, but two or three things stood out for me over the year in terms of personnel (apart from Rice's excellent showings): Williams can play a bit of ball, and in just the way we need - a guy who takes a pass and gives a pass. Stevens looks good at left back and left wing back. Horgan likes to get on the ball, goes looking for it and goes both ways with it, inside and outside. He was excellent when he came on against the USA, as was Stevens. These are only crumbs of information given the context of the opposition but if I was managing the team I'd have acted on them. I'd have found a role for all three and earlier.

We have never done well without two proper defensive midfielders really, but we did scrape a draw in a non-competitive match, some would call that progress.
