Just back to one of the original topics, our junior league game on sunday morning had a minutes silence for the pope, think it was the referee's personal decision.

What about African bishops telling their flocks that condoms don't prevent the spread of HIV? What about African clergy refusing to allow sex-education in it's schools? (ring any bells with us Irish?) What about lack of contraception availability in basic medical packs supplied by Catholic charities?

These directly contributed to the spread of the virus in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Ask any AIDS charity in Africa. The Church should hang it's collective colonialist head in shame - we want you as Catholics but we refuse to educate you about basic stuff that saves lives.

b) Will gates be affected on Friday night by people staying at home to watch the funeral (dont know what time its on) or staying at home for the evening as it might put a lot of people in a somber mood?

As regards the minute's silence. If Linfield FC can find it in their hearts to wear black armbands as a mark of respect in their Setanta Cup game, and I congratulate them for that wholeheartedly, why can't the rest of us give the man a minute's silence? I do it for anyone who is commemorated at games whether I know of their achievements/actions or not.

TV coverage starts at 8.45 am and finishes at 1.00pm. There's a mass in the Phoenix Park as well but that's the afternoon AFAIK.

I hold my hands up, most of this comes as news to me. How much of that was from JP and how much of that them acting on their own?

To the best of my knowledge the Churches position on sex-education is that it is better for partents to teach their children in their homes rather than by a teacher in school?

Your knowledge of the developing world is astounding.

And I'm not explicitly blaming JPII or Church teachings. It's Church actions on the ground in Third World countries that are out of order.

For what it's worth I liked the Pope despite disagreeing with him on social and sexuality issues and on his treatment of women. I personally think that what he did for his own people in Poland plus his advocacy of better distribution of the world's wealth and his outspoken anti-war views are good enough reason to remember him with respect.

Well, people don't mourn according to the Vatican, they mourn according to the way they feel. And people's beliefs is what makes them believers. And who ever said that not going to mass means you're not a true Catholic?

Why ? Because i said Aids was spread by people shagging rings round them ? Im no bible thumper myself although i do go to mass once a week if i can but this crap particularly from that gay activist plonker about the pope being responsible for the spread of Aids is a Joke. catholic church is conservatively estimated at having a total wealth of $1 trillion. land, art, property etc. i dont see that $1trillion getting spent on the poor.**** the church

What the fcuk is going on here.

This is a site for viewing other peoples opinions about football not about people squabbling over how religious they are or aren't. This is fcuking ridiculous.

I respect people's beliefs people's opinions and beliefs (except when they become ridiculous), and I respect the responses to this thread that are football related but I think that it has gotten out of hand. It has become a thread for people to take a swipe at opposing religions and religious beliefs.

I am a fairly religious person and I refuse to air my beliefs here. I think the original question was genuine and warranted a genuine football response. It didn't deserve to be disrespected by petty squabbles over religion.

If you people want to fightn over religious beliefs and connotations then PM each other and don't disrespect us football fans and this site by taking swipes at each other beliefs which are obviously very personal.

I will attempt to find a collective religious site for you lot to argue on in the future. If anyone has any suggestions please post the site address in this thread and we'll be done with this ridiculous display of religious manhood.
