I just don't understand this move. Dundalk have more than enough to win the league comfortably. Even with the current injuries being concentrated in once position they have Shields, McGrath, Moutney, Murray and I guess in an emergency could put Jarvis, Hand or another defender in there. They also have a bunch of wingers, one of whom could probably fill in at number 10 if needed.
They could also just change formation if they don't have enough bodies in midfield. I am going to be really interested to see the P&L details for last year and this year to get an idea on how quickly they are eating the Euro money.

How big must dundalks squad be now. They have a multitude of players it seems. Still, once they can afford it I suppose.

Its not even just the size, its the quality. They have two starting XIs that would rival most others in the league.

This type of signing just speeds up the day that P6 have a spending decision to make, do we invest or pull back? Of course European progress could answer that question for them.

The club have even said they've only taken this measure due to Benson and McEleney's injuries. He'll offer cover in midfield for a few months and then leave.

If you count teenagers Dylan Hand and Lido Lotefa the squad size is now 25 players including the loan signing Joe McKee.

The case for another signing became pressing because of the current injury list with four central midfield players unavailable, two of whom are out for about 3 months.

    Jamie McGrath (expected back soon)
    Jordan Flores (time frame uncertain)
    Patrick McEleney (c12 weeks)
    Robbie Benson (c12 weeks)

Taking Joe McKee on a loan to the summer window is a pragmatic and sensible move - if he is a decent player

Ezekial, I was under the impression that both Benson & McEleney's injuries were not as bad as first feared, out for 3 months is a fair length of time to be honest. i can see why mckee was brought in
I dont see it as envy, btw, more an observation that a complete novice of a manager has a big job keeping that many players happy
Shamrock Rovers- Where trophies are won and envy is scarce

Judging by the result against Athlone it seems that their second eleven aren't up to much.

Now that you are talking squad sizes - What's the sceal with Dan Smith coming in from Bognor Regis?

Smith will be the fourth English striker signed by John Caulfield in recent weeks.
Liam Nash signed a permanent deal from Gillingham while James Tilley and Matty Gillam arrived on loan from Brighton and Rochdale respectively.
Smith, 19, had been on loan at non-league Bognor Regis scoring 12 times in 21 appearances.

Will these 4 lads be duking it out with Cummins, Sheppard, Rainsford, O'Connor and Cian Murphy.

    Is 9 forwards enough?

Gillam injured himself in the Pat's warmup. He's gone back. Smith is the replacement.

Murphy won't play much, very young. Plenty of potential but not this season.

O Connor isn't a striker, he'll play on the wing. Should play the 10 but Buckley is untouchable. Shep isn't a striker either tbf but does get thrown in there. He'll mostly play on the wing too.

For the forward spot, it's really Cummins/Nash/Smith duking it out. Shep could play a few games there but it's not a good sign when he does.

Don't think Rainsford is up to it. Could get a few sub appearances on the wing but I doubt it. I'd expect him to be release by summer.

No question, our squad is pretty big. A fair few are kids though. Good to have them around the squad but unlikely to play much. Ronan Hurley could be the exception. Not many squad players that will be pushing for a starting spot.

I think we signed Poynton with the intention of him being a midfielder, then the opportunity came up to get Forrester and McCabe in and he was suddenly pushed for down the pecking order and reduced to being Madden's back up at right back. Seems strange at face value that he's been let go so early but it makes sense under the circumstances as he probably wants more of a role than a cover/utility player and we probably don't need to be paying him if he's not going to be playing.

I wonder if he’ll go back to Longford, he’s a decent first division player.
    Here on a technicality.
