He's never worked there and I can't see City fans being pleased with him!

Worked with Celtic in some sort of coaching capacity and then in China I think, never linked with any LOI club as far as I know. he is a bit of a favourite with the RTE Sports set so linked with every job going and he managed Donegal bogballers.

Well motivation was the big issue with Derry this season and he is a motivational specialist. He has been open in saying that he would have ambitions to coach football as opposed to bogball. LoI would be a a step in that direction. Its possible, and he would impress at interview. All he really needs is a good assistant with knowledge with the local game for the ins and outs of the sort of contracts thats on offer to players. He might change his mind when he sees the level or resources he'd have to work with in LoI.

He ended up as U20 assistant manager at Celtic, was assistant over in China, and also was a coach at Limavady a while back.
He actually was appointed as a trainer at Derry too, apparently. He got appointed, Kenny was signed as manager the next day, and McGuinness was gone.

It'd be an unusual one, but could be worth a punt maybe? His motivational skills would be very welcome, and there's plenty of options for an assistant.
Have you ever won the treble?

He's an analyst on Sky Sports for the "bogball".

Was he not linked to Galway United earlier in the season? And I had heard a rumour of him getting the Sligo Rovers job a couple of weeks ago, so he would seem to be sniffing around in some form

Doesn't have a Pro Licence as far as I'm aware. Just completed his A Licence earlier this year.

I do believe McGuinness did do a little bit of work with Derry in the past though as part of his college work, he was on placement at both Harps and Derry at different points on his Sports Psychology course to the best of my knowledge.

From what I heard though, Darren Kelly looks to be who Derry are favouring.

McGuinness would be the most interesting/exciting of the names being bandied around at the moment.

He'd shift season tickets, attract a lot of media interest, and probably draw a few more Donegal folk to games.

Whether he'd be any good would remain to be seen - but he'd get the team fit and motivated anyway.

I believe he was linked with Galway before (?)

McGuinness would definitely be an interesting appointment, but how well placed he would be to carry out a rebuilding job of the squad remains to be seen. Unless as mentioned assisted with someone who would cover that side for him.

Very uninspiring list of candidates unless the board look further afield or pull a rabbit out of the hat.

Darren Kelly is manager of Hyde in the Northern Premier League which is 2 divisions below the National League/Conference and had a horrible time in the Conference with Halifax and the Football League with Oldham. The only thing he has going for him is the fact that is from Derry and if the board want to appoint someone with a connection to the club then I would rather give Paddy McLaughlin the job - he has done a great job with Stute, and worked his way up through local football as Trojans. For either of the two men however it would be a significant step up.

All things considered Baraclough looks by far the most credible candidate at this stage.

No to player managers generally, and too soon for McCourt, unless again accompanied by someone else.

We don't really have a solid idea of what Derry will be working with financially next year either. To me Baraclough is the obvious candidate (out of all those mentioned) all things in the boardroom remaining relatively constant. Any significant fluctuations budget wise (I mean apart from the loss of European money) could impact our ability to attract him or any other experienced manager and would lead us having to go inexperienced & local.

I have a funny feeling that we will get a surprise, ie someone not publicly linked.

There is no better young coach in the league than Tim Clancy at the moment. If Derry were going to take a punt on someone out of left field he would be a good solid choice! But of course there is the tried and tested LoI circuit and Ger Lyttle is out of a job. Any jesting aside if Derry are thinking of recruiting from the Irish League then Luttle could be a decent option for them. He would know the IL well and LoI now also. Things were not fantastic at Sligo but he did bring through plenty of youth players and kept Sligo safe in the premier division while doing so. i get the impression that Sligo were on a tight budget too? So could do a job at Derry.

If Derry do their homework they will stay away from Lyttle. In fact if they just get the copy of the most recent edition of the local rag in Sligo that should give them enough information.

Kelly would be disastrous taken at face value no? Seems to have failed and failed quickly at every job he's had in the football league.

Would be disappointed in the Baraclough news were I a Derry fan, they could do a lot worse than tempting him back in. Can't say I know enough of the league up north to have any opinion on others that have been or will be linked.

I heard some comments from Clancy after the playoff that I thought were a bit mad. Basically saying he needed a bigger budget and that his players deserved better wages. Which sounds like next season he intends to spend more on the same players. Just the message any board wants to hear!
