    WYW v Peamount (League)

Wexford reversed the result of last week’s League Cup Final after another compelling game between these two sides and set up a fantastic game for Wexford against Shels next Tuesday night. WYW made four changes from last week’s side and started with Sophie, Nicola, Lauren, Lolly, Doireann, McKenna, Kylie, Edel, Orla, Katrina and with Rianna up front. Wexford started with more purpose than last week’s game, which admittedly wouldn’t have been hard. After an early corner apiece, first decent chance fell to Wexford’s Edel Kennedy who chipped just over the Peamount cross-bar from a Wexford corner. On 19 minutes, Peamount looked like they should have scored when their attacker coming in at the far post couldn’t finish a deep cross. Peamount then continued their good spell when Aine O’Gorman had a snap-shot cleared off the Wexford goal-line. After a yellow card apiece, Peamount had a cross which grazed the Wexford cross-bar but stayed in play. Just as the half-time beckoned, Wexford’s Katrina Parrock was taken down a millimetre outside the Peamount penalty area, and from the free, former Peamount player, Doireann Fahey curled a delicious free over the Peamount wall to put Wexford ahead by a goal at the break.

The second half was just as close. On four minutes, Peamount should have equalised when a low cross was turned over the Wexford bar from close in by a Peamount attacker. McAloon in the Peamount goal then turned a good left-footed shot by Rianna Jarrett round the post for a corner. On eight minutes, Peamount won a peno when Aine O’Gorman went down in the Wexford area and Eleanor Ryan-Doyle gave Sophie Lenehan no chance from the spot. However, Wexford regained the lead when the impressive Katrina Parrock recycled a deep Wexford cross and Rianna Jarrett’s first-time effort gave McAloon no chance for 2-1. After Kylie Murphy had tested McAloon’s reflexes again from distance, a Peamount cross into the Wexford area had to be headed off the goal-line by a Wexford defender. Subs for Wexford during the second half were Aisling Frawley and Emma Hansberry. So, 2-1 for Wexford at full-time after a fantastic contest characterised by the battles between best defender in the country by some distance, Wexford’s Lauren Dwyer, and Peamount’s 100 capped forward, Aine O’Gorman, and Edel Kennedy for Wexford and Karen Duggan for the Peas who tore into each other in the engine-room for 90 minutes.
