Yeah, is really making the most of his loan moves and climbing the ladder pretty quickly. If he continues to be successful for Sunderland, it could open the door to a permanent move next season, if Burnley still aren't ready to give him a shot. And if Sunderland are in The Championship, that puts him into contention for a spot in the squad, although the earliest I can see him there would be 2020 - for the qualifiers, our centre-halves will be from Duffy, Clark, Long, Egan and Keogh, with Lenihan and Williams as back-up. Although, I guess we could give him a run-out against New Zealand in November, assuming he is playing Championship football (or better)

the forgotten man, anything I've seen of him has been very good

He is the fabled CB who can also pass the ball

The Burnley message boards so far seem almost unanimous in awarding Dunne MOM.

Has had mixed loan spells - impressed at Hearts but not so much at Sunderland, although as ever Sunderland can be a bit of a basket case. Would be good to see him get a championship loan move to see what he can do at that level.

Actually I think he should take his chances in Burnley. Long isnt improving or getting younger which i think could make dunne third choice CB.. he would get a lot of football throughout the season for a young player that's ok.

Agree here. He's so much younger than Long. If he passed him out and got a few games in the league and a few more in the cup under his belt it could really help him get his career going.

Dunne's got a definite chance of making it at Burnley, but I think Long's probably well ahead of him as it stands.

I like Long, actually; a very solid and reliable performer. If anything were to happen to Duffy or Egan I'd feel far happier to see him step into the breach than Lenihan. But obviously Kenny views things differently.

Some big bids being turned down for Tarkowski too, so every chance they'll cave before the window closes.

He got a fair bit of of game time at the back end of last season, but of course I'd agree. That said, Long seems to be able to come in and still perform, despite his lack of regular football.

Without wanting to damn him too much with faint praise, he's the the consummate dependable backup player.

Lenihan was namechecked by Keith Andrews a few times as well, could be an influence on his selection.

Possibly so. Another defender in the Duffy mould; a warrior and a leader, but even Blackburn fans admit that Lenihan isn't good on the ball, despite his having played in midfield previously.

I didn't necessarily think he was Kenny's type, so I was slightly surprised by his elevation over certain others.

Anyway, good to see Dunne make his debut.

I wonder if Kenny has a philosophy of preferably having one of his two centre halfs be a bit more of a bully, while the other will be expected to do a bit more on the ball. It's not the worst strategy for set pieces to prioritize physicality in at least one of your centre halfs.

He quite possibly does, in a Ferdinand-Vidic style partnership.
I'd put Clark, Egan, and maybe Dunne in the ball playing role, with Duffy, Dara O'Shea, and possibly Lenihan in the the bullying role.

Whats wrong with bullying in both roles ? ?
