    Wexford Youths Women U17

Result from today: Wexford 4, Greystones 1. First home game in this new league and some decent performances around the pitch by Wexford which were a credit to Alan Browne and team. Best for Wexford were Blessing Kingsley, a very dangerous striker, and a rock of a centre-half, Maddy Lawson. Goal-scorers were Blessing with two, Niamhie Taylor Hughes with one and Sarah Siggins with one.

Wexford Youths Women U17s made it a fine week for the club as they got the best of warm favourites, Cork, in the elite U17 Cup semi-final in Bishopstown this afternoon and so meet Galway in the final. Manager Alan Browne and his team deserve great credit for the achievement in getting a Wexford team to a national final. Alan started with Jean Kavanagh Doyle, Becky Connaughton, Neema Nyangasi, Breda Cushen, Aimee Bates Crosbie, Laura Butler, Beth Evessen, Kira Bates Crosbie, Freya Roche, Eimear Gabbett and with Blessing Kingsley up front. The first forty-five minutes was, by common consent amongst Wexford supporters present, perhaps one of the best performances by a team in pink in many a long year as the away side grabbed Cork by the proverbial throat with a high pressing game and created numerous chances as a result. It started early on when Wexford had the ball in the net from a corner but it was probably correctly ruled out for a foul on the Cork keeper, Coen Hayes. Further high pressure by Wexford resulted in Freya Roche hitting the Cork crossbar with a shot before Kira Bates Crosbie turned a Blessing Kingsley cross just wide of the Cork goal-post. On 13 minutes, Wexford’s Breda Cushen deflected a dangerous Cork cross just wide of her own net for a Cork corner. A minute later, Wexford were down the other end of the pitch but nobody from the away side could profit from Coen Hayes having to push out a good effort on goal by Wexford’s Blessing Kingsley. Coen Hayes was next forced to pull off a great save from obvious Wexford star for the future, Blessing Kingsley. However, Blessing was not to be denied as she forced home the rebound from an Eimear Gabbett shot which hit the Cork crossbar and Wexford were a goal to the good. Cork then finished the half well as they had a shot a yard wide of the Wexford goal and Kavanagh Doyle next had to react well to pull off a double save to prevent a Cork equaliser. 1-0 to Wexford at half-time.

While Wexford had dominated the first half, they sat back much more in the second half which allowed Cork to show off their attacking prowess. Cork had an early shot from their best player, Sophie Liston, which went just over Kavanagh Doyle’s crossbar and then Kavanagh Doyle had to knock a Cork shot around her own post for a Cork corner with her feet. Wexford came back into the game as the second half progressed and Blessing Kingsley nearly notched her second of the game but her shot was blocked for a corner. As the game entered injury time, the final act of the drama was still to come as a defence-splitting pass was put behind the Wexford defence and as the Cork forward finished cleanly past Kavanagh Doyle in the Wexford goal, the assistant referee put his flag up for offside. I wasn’t anywhere close to being in line, but it looked extremely close to me. Only Wexford sub I noticed as the game progressed was Seren Ward for Laura Butler early on in the second half. Fine game between two evenly matched sides and Wexford probably just shaded the game on the basis of their first half performance. Best for Wexford, in addition to Blessing Kingsley, were Kira Bates Crosbie in midfield and Neema Nyangasi in defence while Eimear Gabbett’s delivery of a dead ball from both sides of the pitch was unbelievably accurate and Jean Kavanagh Doyle was both athletic and brave in the Wexford goal. 1-0 to Wexford at full-time.
