Comfortable win for UCD in Ferrycarrig tonight as two late first-half goals punctured Wexford’s efforts to keep the game in the balance. Wexford started with Corey, Conor, Owen, Sean, John, Mark, Mikey, Aaron, Dean, Vinny and with Danny up front. From the start it was UCD dominating possession with Wexford retreating towards their own goal in order to keep the match tight. UCD had also to battle against a bone-hard pitch. Corey Chambers, who had an impressive game between the sticks for Wexford was called into action in the eighth minute when he managed to push away a free UCD header for a corner. On 13 minutes, Corey did even better when he saved Gary O’Neill’s spot-kick after UCD had been awarded a penalty. Although it didn’t influence the result, the ref seemed to favour the away side to a massive degree. On 24 minutes, Corey again kept Wexford in the game as he clawed away another header by UCD. Just as Wexford began to sense the sanctuary of the half-time dressing-rooms, UCD administered two killer blows when Wexford gave the handy O’Connor of UCD too much space inside their box and he blasted a shot off the cross-bar for 1-0 to College. Two minutes later, it was game over as a free header by UCD’s Farrugia gave Chambers no chance. 2-0 for UCD at half-time and you couldn’t see a way back for Wexford.
UCD made it 3-0 on ten minutes of the second period when a good move allowed O’Neill to finish easily. To their credit, Wexford then tried to get at least a consolation goal when Aaron O’Connor had a shot deflected just wide of the post for a corner and Wexford sub Adham Masood, making his league debut, knocked two efforts just past the UCD post. Craig O’Reilly also made his debut for Wexford before game finished on 3-0 scoreline. In addition to a height advantage, UCD looked to be on a different level in terms of strength and fitness which the FAI should probably inquire into. Maybe 120 or so at the game.
