    WYW v Peamount

WYW secured a vital three points against Peamount in Greenogue tonight to put some space between themselves and the chasing teams after an enjoyable game which was a bit more comfortable for Wexford than the scoreline suggests. Tom Elmes started with the same XI as against Limerick with Ciamh, Nicola, Lolly, Lauren, Becky, Claire, Edel, Kylie,Orla, Aisling and with Rianna up front. The main positional switch was that Claire now started on the right and Aisling on the left. First twenty minutes or so was cagey enough with both sides trying to ensure that they didn’t concede early. On four minutes, Rianna Jarrett had a difficult header which she glanced wide after a good cross by Aisling Frawley. After the twenty minute mark, Peamount had their best spell of the game when Heather Payne had a shot but straight at Ciamh Dollard in the Wexford goal, Aine O’Gorman had the same result when on the stretch, and Amber Barrett smacked an indirect free-kick from inside the Wexford area just the other side of the Wexford post. Wexford then began to grab the game and got the reward when Aisling Frawley dispossessed a Peamount defender and was taken down inside the Peamount area for a peno. Rianna faced Niamh Reid Burke with the latter diving the 2015 Cup final side after the penalty battle between these same two players in that game. But Rianna hit it the non-2015 Cup final side and Wexford were a goal ahead. Wexford then brought the game comfortably to the break to stay ahead 1-0 at half-time.

Second half hadn’t long started when Wexford doubled their lead after a good through-ball by Becky Cassin put Rianna Jarrett in the clear and she was able to lob the advancing Reid Burke to put Wexford two goals ahead. Wexford then looked largely untroubled until five minutes before the end as their solid defence coped with any threat posed by Peamount. Nearest Peamount came to scoring were a long-range shot which went about a yard pastthe post and a Karen Duggan effort which went over the bar. However, with five minutes to go, Peamount were offered a lifeline when the ref. awarded Peamount a peno which was put comfortably away by Amber Barrett. Wexford saw the game out comfortably from then on helped by a good catch by Ciamh Dollard from a headed effort by a Peamount attacker. Late subs for Wexford were Becky Conroy and Katrina Parrock. 2-1 at full-time for Wexford after really decent performances all over the pitch. If I was to pick one player out, I’d mention Lolly Conlon who had a stonker of a game marking the ever-dangerous Amber Barrett of Peamount.
