    Foot.ie PROJECT: Wikify Irish Football

In the past we've looked at various ways of cataloguing information about Irish football on Foot.ie, however a big issue has always been that the bulk of knowledge is out there, with you guys, and it's very hard to get a large group of people to collaborate on such a project in an organised way. My last Big Idea was to set up a Wiki (I'll explain that in a minute) on my own site and use that to catalogue the information, but I got to a certain point and realised that it wasn't going to work.

Last night it occurred to me that we can kill two birds with one stone here, by pushing your knowledge into the Football League of Ireland section on Wikipedia, and extracting it later on for use in fixture and results tables, club and player profiles, and all sorts of other stuff. There's already some content there to get us started, it just needs a little reorganisation and filling out with more information. For example, the clubs could be split into Premier Division and First Division on the main page, and some information on the Junior and Intermediate Leagues could be added. Looking at the clubs too, the Cobh Ramblers and Cork City pages pale in comparison to the St Patrick's Athletic page.

If you're not familiar with Wikipedia, in basic terms it's just an online encylopedia that anyone can edit. You don't even have to register, although you will be missing out on some useful tools, like access to pages that you've edited or commented on, preferences that can make editing easier, and your own user and discussion page. Unfortunately sometimes this open policy leads to abuse, but the more members we have on there keeping an eye on things, the better chance we have of reverting those changes quickly and keeping the repository of information about Irish soccer tidy and up to date.

So let's get to work! You guys are the football nerds around here, get your knowledge into Wikipedia now for all to see! Not only will you be helping to raise interest in Irish football, you'll also be helping us by making it easier to add new features to Foot.ie!

It's certainly better since it was updated today by someone with an IP address that also happens to be used be a Foot.ie poster. With a Ramblers avatar. Well done that Ramblers fan!

Nobody from City got up off their arse I notice. Tis the Cork way, sure and begorrah. Sure someone else'll do it and begob and begosh.

You should really ask permission first. They'd be stupid to refuse.

Glad to do my bit -this is a great idea Adam and fair play to the other Raamblers fan(s) updating it!

Longford stuff changed back again by somebody, our webmaster can change it again if he likes, don't really know what they want so I'll leave it to someone else.

It was reverted by Wikipedia user Boothy443 with the comment "others are copyvios". I have no idea what that means but I'm guessing he googled the text and saw the replication. If you really want to contribute, take a minute to ask the webmaster for permission and if it's granted add a note to that effect to the discussion page. It's only fair, since the webmaster owns the copyright on that content.

Fair enough, the webmaster posts on here regularly so maybe he'll take up the baton himself. Wasn't a particularly inspiring contribution from myself anyway, though I did want to ensure that no-one seriously thought our nickname was The Hoops

I have asked the webmasters of www.corkcityfc.ie can i use the info on the site and they said yeah. What do i need to do after i have edited the page ??
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

    Nice one face.

At the top of the page click on the Discussion tab and add a note saying something like: "Information in my edits are sourced in full or in part from the official Cork City FC website with permission, feel free to contact them for confirmation if necessary." If any of your edits are reverted, contact the relevant user and point them to that. Just make sure you don't tread on any toes, it's very easy to start a revert war on Wikipedia and they achieve nothing bar feeding egos.

BTW, I'd encourage moderators to follow liam88's lead in encouraging people to contribute in the forums they moderate. People will need a bit of a push to get started, but I'm pretty sure when they do a few Wikipedia addicts will be created.

Looks like I've started a trend with a few people adding current squads to their club pages. I robbed a load of my stuff off the Man U page.

btw, someone has taken text from the Bray Website without asking:

Is this as simple as it looks? Just edit, enter text and save? I'll do something up for UCD soon so!

Excellent. And yes, it is as easy as it looks, although there's loads of tags that can be used for formatting and linking when you get settled in.

If you're adding a message on a discussion page, you can automatically add your Wikipedia handle and the date and time with four tildes, like this: ~~~~

I think three tildes will just do your handle.

UCD updated (all original). Will go back and add in stuff (pictures, headings, etc.) when I get a chance.
