    Cabinteely (League)

Tight margins as usual between these two evenly matchedsides, but this time it was Cabinteely who prevailed courtesy of a clumsy penalty conceded by Wexford. With Aaron Dobbs injured and we can’t really do without him as our goal-scoring chartshows, Wexford went with Kealan, Liam, Ross, Owen, Sean, Mark, Mikey, Crokey,Dean Kelly, dean George and with Shane Barnes up front. After a cagey first ten minutes or so, Wexford really blossomed going forward and should have managed to go ahead. On 12 minutes, the hard-working Shane Barnes had a run and shot which went just wide. Wexford then had a shout for a peno, not given, on 19 minutes and this was followed by a deflected Wexford shot which went for a corner. Mark Slater then engineered a good Wexford move but his shot proved an easy task for McGuinness in the Cabo goal. Two minutes later, Wexford’s Dean George smacked a speculative effort from distance off the Cabo crossbar. The goal, when it came, was against the run of play. Marty Waters got the ball on the edge of the area and was going nowhere but Sean Hurley stuck in a stray boot and the peno was given and dispatched by Cabo for 1-0 to the away side. A chip by Shane Barnes which went wide of the far post then finished the half and Wexford were decidedly unlucky to go into the break a goal down.

Wexford didn’t play as well in the second half as Cabo managed to get a tight grip on the game. On 65 minutes, Kealan Gaffney in the Wexford goal had to win a 50-50 to prevent a second Cabo goal. Best chance for Wexford came on 71 minutes when McGuinness was forced to save by deflecting a Wexford shot up in the air and a Cabo central defender had to head over his own crossbar to stop the ball from going in. Subs for Wexford in the final 20 minutes were Ryan Nolan and Danny Doyle. With a minute of normal time left, Wexford’s skipper, Ross Kenny, got a second yellow for taking down a Cabo attacker. Despite this, Wexford managed to win three free-kicks in injury time which were put into the Cabo penalty area, but we’re not the tallest side inthe world and were unable to pose an attacking threat as a result of any of them. So 1-0 to Cabo at full-time with about 120 at the game.
