Under the rules, the player becomes onside when the opponent plays the ball, so there's no reason for the VAR to not give a goal. The rule can be changed if people want it changed, but all the VAR did was apply the rule as it stands. That's what he's there for.
You can be booked after 36 seconds, 36 minutes, or 96 minutes.
