I think The boys are back in town is the best suggestion of the lot![]()
Where the streets have no name is a good song but the words don't really relate to a home international football match![]()
Where as the Boys are back in town speaks for itself really![]()

Lads,
All good points but I dont think fans are going to sit through the first half discussing how appropriate the lyrics are for an international match.
Personally I think the musical intro on WTSHNN will whip the crowd into a frenzy and set the volume level for the remainder of the game.
Its up to the fans then.
Who is this guy, Trapper Tony?
Why's everyone getting caught up about the lyrics. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but aren't we talking about editing it down to about 30 seconds (basically the intro), for the players coming out of the tunnel? That's what I assumed when I voted for it anyway.
All the other songs are good suggestions for before the match and at half time.
Anyway, since when did "Hey baby, I wanna know if you'll be my girl" relate to a home international football match?
ps I only voted for U2 because 'I wanna be adored' wasn't on the poll

Guess who just got back today
Them wild-eyed boys that had been away
Haven't changed that much to say
But man, I still think those cats are crazy
They were askin' if you were around
How you was, where you could be found
Told 'em you were livin' downtown
Drivin' all the old men crazy
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town again)
You know that chick that used to dance a lot
Every night she'd be on the floor, shakin' what she got
When I say she was cool she was red hot
I mean, she was steamin'
And that time over at Johnny's place,
Well, this chick got up and she slapped Johnny's face
Man, we just fell about the place
If that chick don't wanna know, forget her
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town again)
Spread the word around
Guess who's back in town
Just spread the word around
Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Dino's Bar 'n' Grill
The drink will flow and the blood will spill
And if the boys wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long till the summer comes
Now that the boys are here again
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town)
Spread the word around
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town again)
The boys are back in town again
Been hangin' down at Dino's
The boys are back in town again

Some people will go on about changing the lyrics, but dont do that. They are perfect. Plus it will be the ultimate tribute to the ultimate Dub, Phillo, who will be 20 years dead next January (correct me if I'm wrong).
"Jacques Santini...will be greeted in every dugout of the country by "one-nil, one-nil" - Clive Tyldsley, 89th minute of France-England June 13, 2004.
"Ooooohhhh Nooooooo" Bobby Robson 91st minute.
yea that would be a good one. overall i wouldnt be too pushed about most of the songs on that list. what about banks of the lee(dont know if thats the real name), molly malone, irish rover, the wests awake. or have the music of go west by the pet shop boys to which everyone sings "stand up for the boys in green" just as the teams come onto the pitch. then with the national anthems over the fields of athenry blears from the loud speaker and drowns out at the corus to which to fans continue singing just as the game starts. i suppose i am living in a dream world unforunately.Originally Posted by Saint Tom

If people are so worried about the U2 lyrics not being relevant, can't someone think up new lyrics
" I wanna run,
I wanna ..uhh..slide?
I wanna stand in the wall,
cupping my pride"
This thing writes itself...

I agree - if this is going to be done it has to be done right, otherwise it will just die a death. But I have to say - the potential here is enormous, get the right men in to do the job is my message to the FAI.Originally Posted by Frankie

BlobbyBlob are you the one with a FAI contact - could you possibly suggest this?

Would there be any lyrics to this?? Just wondering, do people just want an instrumental type thing, or something that gets the crowd singing along to it?Originally Posted by Glapots

The instrumental at the start of WTSHNN is 1 minute 18 seconds long
I think we should welcome it as a new Rep Of Ireland anthem
Molly Malone and the Fields are the things of the 80s and 90s
Oh, when I go there
I go there with you
It's all I can do
No reply for the FAI yet BTW

My suggestion would be to belt out nearly all of the above songs in the 20 mins before a game then the intro or a new mix of WTSHNN bringing the teams out. Maybe play Boys Are Back in town once the teams are actually out, if there's time.

known the organisers they fcuk it up, they'll end up playing the boys are back in town as the away team's national anthem
I went for "Where the..." but would like "Boys are back in town" as well alhough it's already used by Leinster rugby so I don't know how well that would go down with people other then myself and Schumi.
On the Gloria Gaynor thing the Europeans love that 'Na na na' bit towards the end, they played it (as in just that bit)after the French won Euro 2000, whole place was going nuts. In fairness that part of the tune kinda suits football.

Just looking at the list of songs again, there are a few others we could have mentioned, not necessarily to be used as when the teams come out, but just as a warm up or half time (which let's be honest is usually the lamest part of the event)
Anything by Thin Lizzy is always good, although I think the Boys are back in town is a bit 'boring' for want of a better word. Some of their other stuff would be more refreshing - 'Don't believe a word', 'dancing in the moonlight, 'waiting for an aliby' etc
Also that frames song 'revelate ' is cool.
Music played at Lansdowne doesn't neccesarily have to be homegrown but you've got to admit it does add to the occasion when it is, unless of course they start playing westlife or chris deburgh.![]()
Speaking of Irish bands - anyone remember Whipping Boy?
