    Shelbourne Proposed Takeover

FORMER Shamrock Rovers director Andrew Doyle is poised to complete a takeover of Shelbourne.

SunSport has learned that the current Shels board have voted in favour of a buyout by Dubliner Doyle, who was among a number of new people who joined the Rovers board in 2016 but has since stepped down from that role.

    That's a bit of a weird one.

Media speculation on the future of Shelbourne FC

As announced in an article by Emmet Malone in the Irish Times last Autumn, the Club began to look for potential investors who might be in a position to return the Club to where it deserves to be - an aspiration that everyone on the current Board of Management shares with supporters.

Since then, a number of approaches have been made and discussions have taken place with several parties. Naturally, there is a need for discretion in discussions of this kind and we intend to fully respect that confidentiality until there is something concrete to announce, regardless of current media speculation.

We believe the future of Shelbourne FC is a bright one. Our recently-announced partnership with Dublin City University will be a key part of that future, as will our Academy - both boys and girls - and our Women's National League setup.
Tonight sees the start of our League campaign against UCD at Belfield. We trust that Shelbourne supporters will get behind the team tonight and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible throughout the season.

He's still a bit too annoyed about the lack of lights in Drogheda to worry about Shelbourne just yet.

I'm a bit confused by that statement. Surely Shelbourne are exactly where they deserve to be ?

Perhaps this is moving closer to completion. Article in the Sun last Feb prompted the original thread.

Shelbourne appoint 26-year-old as new chief executive as Dublin club eye return to big time

Shelbourne have appointed 26-year-old ex-Shamrock Rovers, Limerick and UCD defender Dave O'Connor as their new CEO.

The Meathman has been hired as part of significant boardroom changes at Tolka Park, with former Rovers director Andrew Doyle bringing new investment to the First Division club.

The best of luck to Dave O'Connor in all his endeavors.

When I see the word "CEO" in league of Ireland football though I just always end up thinking to myself "There's the price of two good players walking around in a suit doing nothing that a few volunteers on a committee couldn't do."

    As for the marketing executive

Sign a few players and get promoted ffs!

I think to have long term ambition clubs need to move beyond an entirely volunteer based model, a general manager at minimum to organise and get the most out of volunteerism. That said a club with a 'CEO' isnt always going to be in safe hands!

Yeah seemed to reap what was sown by Ollie imo , the last board from the outside seemed to do a decent job keeping the club afloat. It always seemed strange how they never became synonymous with Drumcondra, in the same way as Pats - Inchicore, Bohs - Phibsboro, Rovers - no fixed abode etc.

    Maybe cos they're from Ringsend?

And there’s the attitude that’s been a problem for years in this league. If a club can afford to hire good full time staff they most certainly should. How often do we hear the volunteer card thrown out when clubs do a sh1t job of something

I came here from my usual den in the Ireland forum out of curiosity about what is happening with Shels and Pats.

I'm wondering if there is any possibility that Shels would ever return to the south side? From the outside looking in it seems that since Rovers moved out to Tallaght that the best model for all involved would be to have Bohs on the north side and Shels back on the south side. There is loads of abandoned industrial land around Ringsend and the RDS isn't a million miles away from there. Would there be resistance from the fan base to going back over the river?

This is something I've thought about before too. Irishtown Stadium would be an ideal base for Shelbourne surely? Loads of space there to build a decent 4,000-5,000 capacity stadium and other groups there to work with already to build a community stadium.
