    First Round Jitters

Cross V The Port - not the type of classic encounter which it could have been as both teams were like two well drilled boxers who used the jab more often than the big hits. Westport survived the onslaught for the first quarter of an hour and then looked quite comfortable, or as comfy as you can look at nil all. Des O'Malley had a perfectly legal header ruled out after half an hour for infiringing the keeper, it looked as 50-50 as any challenge. It was just a matter of time before someone got a goal, but the surface just would not let it come in the normal fashion. It arrived after 80 odd minutes with Dessie slicing open the Cross defence for Vinny O'Malley to run on to it an bury a half volley past the Cross keeper. Fair result.

Think Cross will pose a few problems for Super Leagur teams up there this year. What a pitch!

Wetport level the scores in the 'Port V's Cross sports duel!

I would think that this was the score after peno's, same as the Castlebar Utd, Snugboro, Lacken & Kilmore games.

    Foot.ie! Unbiased

    Hi all

I am a new member into this forum. I have spent a number of years involved with my club at underage level and stilkl do even more than ever and this season have spent a good deal of time with junior soccer. All points in this forum are excellently raised and debated straight across the spectrum of mayo soccer particularly in relation to our apparent outdated league committee. I wish to make a few points, so please reply.

1-there seems to be many talkers on this forum that appear quite suitable to take an active role on a mayo league committee and are more tuned in than the existing one. SO WHY NO NEW PERSONNEL
2-Why is under 21 and kennedy cup teams the only main topic of any agenda at a league meeting
3- why cant mayo committees meet clubs individually over the winter months, have discussions with all involved in a club, advise and help rather than criticise and fine.
4- if mayo soccer is summer soccer why are all cup competitions in november
5-Surely there are more clubs in mayo than castlebar, westport, ballyheane etc
6-Does the current committee really have any power to enforce anything considering the amount of members actually left on it.

these are just a few points / questions i have at present just to introduce myself, there are many more to come, so if there is anyone out there like myself that thinks mayo soccer is one of the best leagues in the country, why arent clubs getting their value for money and skill.

The Ballina Town v Partry Ath. game finished 4-2 to Ballina not 5-2 as quoted. Partry were 4-0 down at half time and were outplayed in the 1st half but they were a different team in the second half (despite their goalkeeper and 4 midfielders not being available for this match). This misprint was in the papers and on teletext.

Nice to see interest in the games, 'Cross, W'port, 'boro, healty interest, scores discussed, the state of Crossmolina pitch (and they complained in the papers about the omnigrass!), and then we get "handbags" from Unbiased ! Here's a guy that has definatly been there.....and not gotten his way.
This is the first season that junior finals were not played in July. But if common sense prevails I would imagine that they will revert back to July for next season. Wonder where "U21 & Kennedy cup only main topic at league meetings" came from.
Definatly a lemming here! How many league meetings did you attend Mr.unbiased?
or....how long since you left the league?

    Exclamation unbiased

    hi manfred

remembering football not personalities was once a quote of yours........

however, have not been there and never sought things my way, had attended quite a number of league meetings some years ago, has been mainly schoolboys & youths meetings since, that was probably where i heard kennedy cup and under 21's been mentioned so regularly.though getting back into the junior fold and have been at the few meetings this year.

one thing that has never changed is the passion and committment of players, volunteers and spectators that support each and individual club, no matter what the size or level of success.as a result, you have to forgive my frustration, not as you call it 'handbags', at the present state and the likely future of the mayo league. i am delighted to see many teams make great strides this year but there is a 'premiership' type of trend developing which i do not think would benefit every club in the league.lets face it unless you are extremely lucky as a club, many small clubs find junior football difficult to sustain and as usual it is the same faces there to lend a huge hand every season.the comfort of a club paying players and/or managers is a brilliant position to be in but what happens to the clubs that find it difficult to maintain even the basics for a season.dont get me wrong, every club would like to see success and rewards to their players at every level. but i have grave concerns at the direction and pace of which some clubs are going even without a comment or guideline from the mayo league ( well, at least i heard or seen nothing only in relation to the schoolboys transfers).

i do not wish to tread on footsteps in this forum, but from what i have read from the first post up until now is a congregation of people with the interests of soccer in mayo at heart and if new ideas and structures can be agreed for next season by all here contributing, it would be a major triumph and onre that would have to be looked at seriously by those in positions of power.

(and they complained in the papers about the omnigrass!),

Omnigrass is for training not for matchs. Nobody wants to play matchs on it, despite a famous quote by a Mayo league officer who said that" eircom & prem teams would be playing on them in 10 years". Welcome to old Trafford home of the omnigrass.

I agree one hunderd percent, no team should have to play on the Omnigrass, its good for five a sides and possibly friendlies but not for games that matter. That said, it does have a positive in that it allows the game to be played on the deck but it is very quick as a surface, and we won't talk about the possibilities for injury when slide tackling.......

Crossmolina's pitch - like playing on the back of moby dick, like an upturned boat hull, crazy stuff. Forgot to mention also that the ref. was half an hour late for the game as some beaut in the MAFL mixed up the fixture times......go easy on them lads.

I hope they spit-roasted the dinosaur.

Mossy, i would back Celtic to walk through, they're savage strong and I'm glad we did'nt meet them in Mayo.

Westport should be able to sneak through although bringing them down to a bad ground pitchwise can work in the advantage of the opponent but they'd have to be awful good and Westport awful bad for us to go out.

I reckon Fahy/Heane will be a bomber of a game - I have a feeling Fahy could shock a superleague side and get through to the open draw as they easily have the measure of Glenhest or Glenisland (and I'm not saying that cos of my spat with Forever).

Claremorris V the Boro will also be a cracker, two of the county's best strikers going head to head - jury is still out for me. I hope it's Claremorris V Manulla though, bit of a local derby, interesting few games ahead!

And just to make Joe happy, c'mon the Boro on Sunday!

Nice to see a bit of posativity!. Unfortunatle C'morris will be 3 players down for trip to Snugboro, including their keeper! Still, any team that has done league & cup double at junior and U12 will be in a good state of mind. Last time C'morris got promoted they drew Erris at home in Con cup and lost 6 - 5 aet in a cracking match. Would be nice to see similar type of game here. That day Eric Reilly got 4 and Geremy Dee got a hat trick! How times have changed! Or have they?
Strange, no word on Connacht meeting. Will K.Kelly be playing on Sun in Westaro cup final? If not, who? D.Kilkelly or P.Crean? So many questions, such little time.
    !!

Fair enough only 1, but are'nt there 26 counties to be worried about, only a few of the big teams can get to the open draw so I'd save the slagging for when the competition hots up. Mayo's big two teams will go far in this compettition and I'd put my house on that. We respect Limerick soccer up here but if your feelings are not mutual, go back down to one of the many threads on the junior forum where your sniping might be appreciated.

You know yourself that Fairview are gone and they're the only team down there who's won it in recent years. So by your reckoning the biggest team are gone already and therefore, the competition must be de-valued again.
