With the friendly against Longford only hours away Rovers continue in their quest to be totally prepared for the coming season. The friendly against De Town will be yet another indicator as to how the preparations are progressing. With the deadline for signing players looming, Friday is the day, Sean Connor is in England knowing that there's still a couple of key positions needing attention.
I reckon we have four positions which need filling if we are to make any realistic push for promotion and I'm sure Sean knows that also.
I'm not 100% happy with Banana, he's a good shot stopper but he's inclined to wander mentally and that's not good for the last member of defence. The central defence is a problem as well. Sean has tried numberious combinations but we still look very vunerable, we certainly need tightening up and someone that will talk to the players around him. It's a tall order but I'm sure such a player is out there. Sean has plenty of contacts so I'm confident the problem will be solved by Friday's deadline.
The left side of midfield is very weak. Young Jason McCartney is a lovely ball player but he's too easy pushed off the ball and basically the First Division is too physical for such a young kid. He'll do a job for us throughout the season but we can't expect him to be ever present.
Then there's the need for goals and where they're going to come from. Let's face it if we can't score we'll win nothing. The Paul McTiernan of two seasons ago is just what the doctor ordered but where is he?? I believe Alvarez will make an impact in the First Division but we need a player that can thrive on scrapes that will fall in our favour. McTiernan would certainly be the player but at this stage it seems we'll have to work without him so again I'm expecting Sean to come up with the goods in this department as well.
A tall order as I say but one that needs addressing. Friday is the deadline and after that our season is in the laps of the gods. One thing is for sure, the game against Harps will be our most important to date. We'll have a lot to prove and where better to prove it than against our bitter rivals. Yea, I'm already looking forward to Sunday ........
