At the Ireland Bosnia game in the U17s a few years ago, got chatting to a scout with Villa, older chap. Got chatting about the Irish players going through the Midlands at the time, and the standout player for him was Doyle-Hayes, albeit he wasn't sure he'd break through at Villa.

Dundee United interested in signing him, as a contract offer from St Mirren remains on the table:

Not much of a step up really, although they would be able to pay him slightly more than St Mirren could.

This agent of his seems to be a chancer. This is the second season in a row he's been shopping the lad around and not without incident. Has to be a distraction for the player towards the beginning and end of the season. Didn't he fall out of the St Mirren team towards the back end because they knew he was unlikely to commit? And he joined them late at the start of the season. And he only got 22 league games with them. I wonder if he had a full season to his name would the agent's job be a little easier. Surely.

Last minute turnaround on this one and he's making the John McGinn move from St Mirren to Hibs instead of going to Dundee United.

A 2 year contract should give him a chance to finally settle down at a club for a while, Hibs are a much better setup than Dundee United as well and a realistic stepping stone to bigger things if he is good enough.

Also nice to see an Irish player on the books at Hibs again, there has almost always been a few to follow there, but none last season after Horgan was sold to Wycombe late in the transfer window.

Hibs have 12 midfielders in their first team squad, Dundee Utd 9; hopefully young Jake will get enough time on the pitch to generate an eventual move to a higher level.

Three or four of those 12 are expected to move on or be moved on this summer - Wright, Mallan, Hallberg and Irvine not expected to stay. Three more are young lads that are nowhere near the first team. There's a couple of wide players in that group as well as a number 10 (Allan). So the competition isn't that tough - it's basically him and three others (Gogic, Newell, Magennis) for two or maybe even three starting places depending on how they set up. None of those other three are world beaters either, even by SPL standards.

So he should get plenty of game time unless he really stinks the place out.

He'll be on decent money there so he will get game time. Hopefully he does well.

Positive feedback on him from the Beeb website: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/58061285
    What did we learn?

Hibs will be disappointed not to have established a lead but satisfied they were able to find an equaliser against tricky opponents who eased aside Aberdeen 4-0 on aggregate two years ago.
In Doyle-Hayes, they have found a midfielder with style and creativity who can grace this level of European football and, if they can be more clinical in front of goal in a week's time, can progress to the next stage.

He's being utterly lauded by Hibs fans. As he was by Cheltenham fans and, for a while, St Mirren fans. I really hope he sustains this form for the season and finds his level next season so that he can kick on and challenge for the senior squad. He might do that whilst at Hibs too.

Who knows, could be another John McGinn. I don’t think anyone saw McGinn turning into the player he has become back when he was in his mid 20s.

Back when he was in his mid 20s? He's 26, was MOTM in his international debut against Denmark in 2016 and an immediate success for Villa on signing in 2018. With respect, I think lots of people saw his potential.

I don't think he's a McGinn, who was rated very highly going right back to his St Mirren days and who you could see from day 1 at Hibs was the best player at the club by a distance. Doyle Hayes is off to a solid start all the same though and may well outgrow the club if he can produce performances consistently that are at the same standard as his first few games.

Potential to be a good player for Scotland and potentially a premiership player yes, but to become a 30 million pound player and one of the best box to box midfielders in the league surely not.

Rated highly yes but hardly rated as the payer he’s ended up becoming.
After only afew games the Hibs fans are absolutely wetting themselves over him JDH, I guess we’ll have to see how get does again Celtic/Rangers or against the top teams in Europe before we see how he does.

But the potential has and continues to be realised. He's already a top premiership player with Villa and a standout international for Scotland. The asking price would likely start at €50 million. Your assessment is three seasons behind.

That’s the point, I’m talking relative to where he is now. He’s standing out at Hibernian at a young age, if he continues this way who knows where he might end up.

The only thing I know about JDH, is that at the Ireland Bosnia game in St Georges Park, an age ago, some grizzled auld Villan sat beside us (or was the other way around, cant remember?) and starting speaking of JDH in the highest calibre, and that he was one of the best prospects he had seen in his time following Villa youth teams, and that we should be glad he's Irish. Or to that effect.

The only thing that would concern me is that he's 23 in a few months. This really needs to be his breakout season. That applies to plenty other Irish 'prospects'.
