I think in the states you can be charged when people ring you a bit like roaming here I suppose.

Brother is on the Uk on pre-pay & always has a better phone than me on contract. I don't think hes ever paid for a phone & wouldn't be big spender.

I mailed 02 so be interesting to see if 5 years custom means anything. I think i'll just buy phone SIM free move to Meteor as they cheaper on pre-later than 02 on contract.

phones are usually dearer on sim free. if meteor dont have the phone you want, buy it from o2 as pay as you go (it'll be cheaper than sim-free), and get it unlocked in one of those unofficial mobile phone shops. you can use the o2 SIM card as a source of emergency credit in the unlikely event you run over meteor's €30 a month (€20 for free SMS&MMS, €10 they give you free).

Meteor have no feckin' coverage! I had to change to Vodafone, dearer but better coverage. My phone network is always robbed by British Networks (Orange, T-Mobile, BT Cellnet, O2 UK) because I live too close to the border..
And then I am charged at roaming prices.

If I had €1 for everytime I got a "Welcome to the UK, Enjoy your stay" message while sitting in my house..

One gous at work paid €200 for sim-free version for which i'd have to pay €240 for upgrade. Think its a hacked Orange phone not that you'd notice.

meteor have perfect coverage, their deal with o2 means that i usually have the best coverage. i had coverage all the way on the train from cork to dublin, and all the way to longford and back. im the only one with coverage underground in UCC. really, the no-coverage argument is completely outdated. you'd have to go to aran to not have coverage, and then, its o2's fault.
