Goal out the blue by Crokey and what looked like a bizarre sending-off gave Wexford the chance to look for an equaliser in Ferrycarrig tonight but ultimately Longford went away with the three points in a game which ebbed and flowed for both sides. Wexford started with Corey, Conor, Ross, Owen, Andy, Dean, Crokey, Mikey, Duxey, Markand with Aaron Dobbs up front. Gamestarted at a fairly gentle pace with both sides looking reasonably relaxed. On ten minutes, a good Wexford move saw Mark Slater put Dean Kelly in the clear down the right wing, but he couldn’t keep a volley on target with only Skinner to beat. On thirteen minutes, Longford had a shot deflected over the bar following a good cross by Aidan Friel. Longford then had a header a yard wide from a corner before Aaron Dobbs was put through but a heavy headed touch meant that Skinner was able to grab it. With Wexford having looked slightly the more threatening, Longford managed to go ahead on 38 minutes when a delicate cross to the far post by Don Cowan gave Verdon the easiest of headers and Longford were 1-0 in front. Longford then took control of the match until Wexford got their goal back midway through the second half. 1-0 to the away side at half-time.

Longford continued their dominance at the start of the second half, and with excellent delivery from set-pieces, it led to their second goal when Corey Chambers couldn’t properly clear a Longford corner and Noack-Hoffman bundled the ball home for 2-0 to Longford. Just before the hour mark, Eoin Porter and new signing, Adam O’Rourke, came on in place of Dean Kelly and Duxey Dunne. Just as it looked like being a long night for Wexford, Thomas Croke pulled a goal back for the home side when he drilled a low shot home from just outside the box which Skinner got a hand to, but couldn’t divert past the post. Wexford then got two quick yellow cards for fouls on Don Cowan, before with 15 minutes to go, Adam O’Rourke and Longford’s Dillon fell to the ground together after a foul by Adam O’Rourke and Dillon’s effort at pushing O’Rourke away was deemed to merit a straight red with O’Rourke getting a yellow. Considering that Dobbs had pushed Haverty in the chest in the first half without any sanction, it looked very harsh by ref. Mullally. This encouraged Wexford to have a real go to get the equaliser in the last 15 minutes, but it seemed to me that they didn’t play direct enough, and Longford escaped without too many scares to end up 2-1 winners at full-time. Late sub for Wexford was Danny Doyle for a limping Thomas Croke. Best for Wexford were probably Crokey and Mark Slater while Adam O’Rourke looked to have real pace in the 20 minutes he was on the pitch. For Longford, Haverty and Cowan impressed. About 220 at the game.
