Wexford made it as difficult as they could for the leagueleaders in the RSC tonight, but ultimately couldn’t hold out despite a heroic effort in goal by Wexford keeper, Corey Chambers. With Ricky Fox and Thomas Croke suspended, Wexford started with Corey,Craig, Ross, Owen, AJ, Dean, Mikey, Aaron, Danny, Eoin and with Aaron Dobbs up front. Waterford applied most of the pressure throughout the first half with Wexford conceding lots of space as they did in the previous match against UCD. On three minutes, Waterford had a header from a free which was deflected over the Wexford bar for a corner. Waterford then tried a set move from another free, before on 11 minutes,Corey came out well to block away a one-on-one against him by Conor Whittle forthe Blues. Corey then pulled off twomore decent saves, before on the half-hour, Wexford skipper Craig McCabe limpedoff and was replaced by Andy O’Connor who went left-full. This left Derek Daly free to cause mayhemdown the opposite wing for Waterford and with Marky O’Sullivan winning everything in the air, it was difficult to see Waterford being kept scoreless for the full 90 minutes. However, Wexford caused their own major surprise with two minutes to go in the half, when with their first decent attack of the first period, they scored when Aaron Dobbs got hold of the ball wide left and fired in a low hard cross which was knocked home at the far post by Dean Kelly for 1-0 to Wexford at half-time.

Corey Chambers continued to keep Waterford out with a few early saves when, on 58 minutes, Wexford conceded a penalty when Ross Kenny rushed to the corner of the area to challenge a Waterford attacker who went down. Davy McDaid converted from the spot and Waterford were back level 1-1. Conor Sutton then came on as a sub for Wexford before, on 66 minutes, O’Sullivan’s dominance in the air paid dividends with a free header from a corner and Waterford were 2-1 ahead. With 15 minutes to go, Dobbs nearly scored an unlikely equaliser when he beat Matt Connor to a flighted ball into the box, but the header looped over Connor and wide. Shane Dunne then blasted a volley a couple of yards wide before Waterford should have made it three right on the 90 minutes, but O’Halloran couldn’t stretch far enough at the far post. So 2-1 to Waterford at full-time after a hard-working effort by Wexford to try to get something from the game. In addition to Corey Chambers, best for Wexford were Andy O’Connor and Mikey Byrne who worked really hard while Waterford had two real threats going forward in O’Sullivan and Daly.
