Wexford Cup Final 2017 (North End v Moyne)

Really good contest between two evenly matched sides as North End edged out Moyne of Enniscorthy on penalties to enable the Wexford town side to secure a league and cup double in Ferrycarrig this afternoon. No team announcements but North End had starting Lee Walker, Warren Broaders, Decky Downes, Leigh Smith, Gary Byrne, Shane Dempsey, Rocky Fenlon, Adam Beary, Kyle Dempsey and Spot Murphy. Moyne started with Pa Doyle, Rory O'Connor, Ger Burke, Richie Farrell, John Peare, James Peare, Mossie Mahon, Peter Marsden, Sean Kenny and three others. As expected, game began with both sides eager to get stuck in and a few tasty challenges. On 15 minutes, Spot Murphy had a snap shot for NE, but Pa Doyle got down to save in Moyne's goal. Three minutes later, the NE defence stood still for an offside flag that never came, and a Moyne attacker had a relatively easy volley which he buried past Walker in the NE goal and Moyne were 1-0 up. Game deteriorated after that with neither side able to get the ball down on the lively pitch, but on 28 minutes, NE's Rocky Fenlon was almost through on goal but for a brave dive at his feet by Pa Doyle. Adam Beary for NE then had a good chance for an equaliser when put through by Spot Murphy, but blasted well over. Beary then got a yellow for dissent when, with two minutes to go in the half, NE's Shane Dempsey ran through the Moyne defence to knock a low shot past Doyle with his left peg and NE were level at 1-1. Remarkably, Moyne were to go in ahead at half-time when an attacker ran into space with the NE defence again looking static, and a good volley found the net to put Moyne 2-1 ahead at half-time.

Second period saw Moyne showing a bit more composure in the game with John Peare marshalling affairs for the Enniscorthy side. However, a bad back pass by Moyne nearly put Pa Doyle in trouble, but the NE attacker managed only to steer the ball wide of the left-hand post. Moyne's substitute, Alan Tobin, then had a good run down the left wing, but his cross couldn't find the Moyne attacker free at the far post. NE then put together a good passing move together to enable the squared cross to be tapped home past Doyle for 2-2. With five minutes to go in the game, a Moyne player got a second yellow but Moyne were able to safely negotiate the full ninety minutes to push the game into extra-time. Both sides were looking tired at this stage, but Moyne had a header just wide in the first period of extra-time, while subs Lee Aust for NE and Alan Tobin of Moyne both had chances in the second period to make themselves heroes. On to penalties and it went to 3-2 for NE before Alan Tobin of Moyne hit the post. Adam Beary of NE got the fourth for NE before Moyne missed again and the cup was heading to Wexford town on the basis of a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win for North End. Looked to be about 800 at the game.
